Max Boost

I'm getting an '02 Mustang V6 within the next couple of weeks here, and am interested in running a supercharger, but I have heard that the bottom end is sort of wimpy. I haven't been able to find concrete figures on the maximum amount of boost it is able to run without going to forged internals, so does anyone know what the max safe boost for this engine is? I may go with a rebuilt turbo, because I have more experience with turbos, and the lag doesn't bother me (I'm not planning on doing much racing).

Lastly, what is the weak link on the bottom end, is it just the connecting rods, or what?

acctually the essex's aren't to wimpy at all... people on here have ran 8-10 psi with stock motors for a few thousand's of miles...

what exactley were you looking at supercharger wise? most should work fine till you get the money to rebuild the bottom end...

also their is a kid on here with a stock engine and a twin set up runin 4 psi... well last i knew soo... ya

You could blow up a motor at 5lbs if its not tuned just right or you could potentially go for 10's of thousands of miles at double or tripple that amount of boost with no problem. it all lies in how good of a tune you have. The essex blocks are also cast iron where as the v8's are i believe mostly aluminum

Well, a good tune is no problem. I'll probably run a Megasquirt (http://www.msefi.com/), and my father wrote the code for it, and can do virtually anything with it. Also, I'll be doing fairly extensive mods over about a two year period (custom tool steel cam shaft, at some point forged internals, standard array of bolt ons, etc.).

As far as what sort of sc, probably a pretty small Eaton, intercooled if I can find the space. I don't really need a kit, I can get a lot of fabrication done to very demanding tolerances.

That is to say, a roots-style rather than a centrifugal supercharger.

... i think the turbo would see more potential as it is a slightly easier retune then a chrager would be... but as it is your opinion and your car... its your choice... but like was said they will work on stock...

has anyone heard from via sin dios... the kid with the twin setup?

turbos are much harder to tune than a supercharger buddy.

Well, according to my calculations, with a good roots-style super, without intercooling, running 10 pounds of boost, you're making near 260bhp at peak right off the bat. I would rather run less boost and intercool it for the same power gains, however. I could drop to 7 psi and with moderate intercooling, have reached the same power.

Is there sufficient space to run an intercooled setup? If so, how big an intercooler?

I'm not by any means an authority on the subject, but most people in here have suggested turbos rather than superchargers for my v6

Yeah, but if you're running really low boost (less than 7-8 psi) it is hard to find a turbo that is worth it. Plus, if you are racing, spool up time on small turbos can get pretty bad. I had a '91 Audi 200 with a little stock turbo (about 10 psi) and the spool up time versus the return was less gratifying than my '87 Audi 5000, which runs 20-22 psi at the top (it isn't even close to stock).

... oh i forgot you don't have a stang yet... okay i took my fan off and with the belt off their is almost like 8 inches... its quit a bit of space... plenty for a 3 inch thick intercooler... if you mount it be hind... if you mount it in front i have heard and seen setups that work... i didn't knwo you could run intercool on a root style...

Cool, thanks. I still don't know what I'm going to do exactly, but I have plenty of time. Once I get it, I'll probably start with bolt ons while I'm figuring out if I'm even going to go forced induction, but I certainly wouldn't without intercooling.

Oh, and I'll probably relocate the battery anyhow, because I don't like it under the hood.
