Help Me Go Fast
Im 17 years old, and my dad didnt want me to have a fast car because of insurance. So we bought a 2000 3.8. I love it to death, but after about a week of driving it, im craving more power...Ive taken it up to 118 where it shuts down a couple times...And everytime i just wish i could go a little faster. So heres the deal, im a senior in high school, i make 8.25 an hour at maybe 20 hours a week in the winter...But i know i could get more hours if i wanted. Anyways, i need suggestions for power. I read that bolt ons dont really increase hp all that much. Should i go from a 3.8 to a 4.2? How much will that cost? I dont want to spend more than $5,000. Could a stock v6 handle a supercharger? Or a turbo? Please let me know anything you know to help.

First off, stop topping it out. Having a fast car doesn't mean a thing if you're in a body bag on the road next to it's crumpled remains.
Second, read through the stickies about mods since you don't seem to have a good grasp of what's available. These cars CAN handle boost, most will say go turbo, buts there's a lot more you need to make it work than just a turbo. 5 grand is a nice budget, for now I would just do full bolt ons, some gears and a good tune, that will put you around 5 grand. From there you can decide whether you still crave more, which you will if you actually get that far. Then you can decide which power adder or n/a kit you want.

anyone can top out...your 17 and have a lot to learn, stop putting other in danger because i doubt you do this at a track because your in a sixxer...besides...its more fun going fast in short burst from a dig....
as for your question...just basic bolt ons...thats about all..and for 5k you should be able to get a few exhaust, LTs, gears, tlok....but please man keep the speeding on the track...im telling you it's more fun...

from the sounds of it you shouldnt have a license.
how bout u just save your money until you realize that going that fast isnt safe nor is it important for a dd. also please review the forum rules before talking about your little speeding adventures

omg everyone saying stop doing this did the same crap when they were your age. just cool it a little. you dont want to learn the hard way if you know what i mean.
you wana go fast you need to let us know your budget. most of all the most important thing is Its not how fast your car CAN go. Its how fast it gets there

Once again, i dont want to spend over 5,000. Would the rear end be able to handle a supercharger?

Bear with me a minute. The above is good advice.
I am lucky I lived through my teen years, some of my freinds were not lucky enough. The track is a blast. The safety equipment is great, and handy. First, Big brakes (consumers reports only rap on your car). If you go fast you need to stop fast. I totaled my 2000 cause I could not stop in time ( thanks, ford for good seatbelts and air bags). If you want to feel fast, or get to speed limit first, Gears, and posi. Bolt ons like Cold Air, headers, true dual exaust, and a tuner, underdrive pulley, all work. Nitrous for short HP increase, boost for long term. If you can do work your self, $ 5,000 can go a long way.

i thought the govenor turns it off at 108
? anyway this is why insurance so damn high for the rest of us teenagers... 5000 is a pretty nice budget i would go with boost but first get dual exhaust, cai, gears, tlok, and a tuner... those are probably the best starting mods... the only reason i say get the cai is for the exhaust tone because without it its ridiculously raspy in certain rpms

Something else to think of.
The more you mod it the higher the probability that something on it will break. You need to be ready to deal with that.

117 is the governor. But yeah... 5 grand = full bolt on/gears/tune. Then the car will be ready for boost if it even gets that far. I include suspension and brakes in bolt ons, you need those things to safely and effectively run a boosted or high power application. Don't just throw on a turbo kit and call it a day, not how it works.

Boost it.
Exhaust, forced induction, gears, fuel mods, and tune. Should cost you just under 5g if you find deals and do the work yourself.

well i'd never do big brakes FIRST on a stock car considering the dealer generally knows what they're doing. why spend $1000+on a big brake kit to stop a car that doesnt make 200rwhp?!
honestly with $5k your best bang is bolt ons, posi, gears, and nitrous. then when you say you dont want to spray. a used turbo kit or s/c....either of those 2 options will spend your $5,000up after tune
