+1.

It doesn't have to be something boring, either. There's tons of entertaining cars that can be found for under a grand if you look hard enough and don't insist on any particular brand or country of manufacture.

Yup. I loved my 89 lebaron turbo because everytime i drove it, it was an adventure. Would it start? Would it stop? Would it explode? .

All I can say is i drove it for 6k miles, only adding gasoline and oil, all while have 0 freeze plugs and 0 antifreeze. Don't ask how, I couldn't tell you.

i would say just invest in a good set of tires. I live in North Dakota and we get like 20 inches of snow at a time sometimes and tons of snow. I have a set of just bare black cheap rims i put on the back with snow tires that happen to be studded. ND allows studs and then I put 140lbs of sand in the trunk with extra sand and a shovel incase i get stuck. I have gotten stuck a couple of times but that is mostly cuz i was goofin around. I would just say go slow. Nothing beats going slow and being cautious.

Lots of good advice here, let me put my 2 cents in.

My stang now hibernates Winters, but I've driven them since 2004. I used 150 lbs of kitty litter in the trunk and had Blizzacks on my 03. Worked.

But I also used my automatic like a stick, had the best success using 2nd from a stop.
Just drive like a Nun and stay away from stop lights on the top of a hill! Omg! PITA
