What we can't get is how to get the shift indicator off. If there is a bulb under there we can't figure out how to get to it.

alright i checked and couldnt find it, but i did find this Install Guide: UPR Shift Knob for Automatic Trans - Ford Mustang Forums

it basically breaks it down to what you need.

"You may want to remove the face plate (shows P,R,N,D,2,1) to see what you're doing. This is accomplished with a star screw driver (two screws on the left side, then pop it off). "

The star bits that he is talking about are torq bits

Thanks so much! We got that part but now it seems like it stuck. Like something else besides those two screws are holding it in. Any ideas?

I'm not familiar with automatic shift knobs on Mustangs but is it possible that there are clips also holding it in?

There are two torx bolts and just two pins that push into the base. You should be able to wiggle it free after removing the two torx bolts.

If you cant get it from there you'll have to remove the center console but I'm sure you can reach it once you get the cover plate off.

We got the two bolts out but those pins have such a tight grip on it. I tried and my dad to wiggle it free. The back right side seems to be coming loose but the front right side is not going anywhere!

This is what we got to last night till I had to leave and go somewhere. lol

Just pull the thing off, the clips are probably just stuck, besides if you brake 1 clip you still have others and they will hold it in fine seeing as you have an auto and you won't be doing much shifting while driving.
How the hell did this topic make it to two pages?
