Mine has a light rattle when I accelerate sometimes. It hasn't always done it, and it's not very noticeable, but I can definitely hear it coming from the engine from time to time. Then there are days when my dash seems to be loose, and other days where it's just fine. So who knows.

Ok. When you start it up and it rattles, is it more like a scratching (could almost sound like rattling), and it ONLY does it when you crank the car, than it is your starter. The teeth wore down too much to crank it properly. Replace your starter, i guarantee you it will go away.

can also be the oil pump, the pump could have a few nuts not tourqed enough or you could just need an oil change with a thicker oil grade

Starter is 100 at most. if it was the oil pump, it would rattle for more than just 5 seconds. i would constantly rattle.

its not that bad. its an easy job. My car did the EXACT same thing. It
sounded like the rattle was coming from the intake. It only did it for like 5 seconds. Sometimes it didnt do it for some reason. But when I replaced the starter, it was fine. its easy to do also. 2 bolts, no shims. about 10 minutes of work.

not if it just has lost some power over time and runs ruff for the first couple of seconds getting the oil flowing, a good indicator of this bieng the problem would be the oil pressure being low

True. But his car is only 12 years old. they are made to last longer than that. It could be. You have a valid point, but I had the same problem, and it was the starter. Thats why I say that. Whats your oil pressure running at
death?

the problem with it being the starter is that on all the cars i've seen with bad starters it took forever for the engine to start.

mine always started up as normal. no lag in time. It was just right after it fired it rattled for a couple seconds. But other than that, it started normal. The teeth on the starter were just a little worn and slipped on the crank. thats what makes the "rattling" noise. when the starter's power gets shut off (after 3-5 seconds), it would stop.
