Here we go....

Alright, first off this is my first post (though I've read through a lot of forum articles here). I've really come to respect the insight you guys have (and the complete lack of bs is really nice....). Anyway, back to the question:

I've got me a 2000 mustang v6, complete with K&N CAI and a Diablosport Tuner. Now it's time for the exhaust. Seeing how there is no point to put in a midpipe (even firing engines may sound ricey, but they do have their good points....), I've narrowed down some exhaust options and need some opinions. Keep in mind that performance is first, and exhaust note second (but a close second nonetheless). I also want to stay 50 state legal (most likely gonna end up living in California at some point in my life). We've got:

Flowmaster 40 Catback (Sound amazing)
Pypes Catback w/ Pro-V's (Sound amazing)
GT Takeoff's w/ no midpipe (Sound not so amazing....)

(I guess there is also the possibility of taking off the y connection on both the Pypes and Flowmasters and have them run without a midpipe, but I'm having a shop do the install and I want the process to be reasonable)

If there are other catbacks that you would recommend that is fine, but I need to price to be under $400 (including shipping to MN). Please also keep in mind I DO NOT have the GT rear bumper, so if that poses a problem to anything I've posted please let me know. Thanks guys for all your help!

I will have to disagree with you bud on the part where you said there is no point for a midpipe. A midpipe will give you better flow, more power, and a better sound.

The only thing about a midpipe is it doesn't matter if you have an x or an h.

If you want a supercharger, all motor, or nitrous I would do this setup.

Long tube headers, catted shorty h-pipe, and a catback of your choice.

If you are going with turbo, or just want something different than most setups.

Shorty headers, catted h-pipe, and catback of your choice.

I chose to go with a MAC catback, and I have a mac catted h-pipe on it's way.

they are straight through designed mufflers so the glass pack will help make up for the lost back pressure there no back pressure is just as bad as to much.

I would suggest mac long tube headers, a short off road H pipe and mac cat back for the same year GT. you could pay a shop to install, but these all bolt on with 10 bolts and hangers... it is a 5 hour complete job including full exhaust from factory to modified.

you will make the most power with long tube headers, and you will be much louder without catalytic converters. and you will sound decent with mac. you will make the most power with magnaflow though.

btw, i have a glasspack style muffler that is louder than most modded GT's. i run mac long tubes, short off road H pipe, and magnapack cat back.

rev

2nd gear

slow rev

Thats also just the muffler, and also your hearing these on v8 engines. Cherry bombs have been around for a long time, but lost popularity. They are good mufflers, but I'm not too sure you would like it on a v6.

From what I've reseached the only thing a midpipe will do is balance out exhaust gases from an engine that is not even firing. Hence, adding a midpipe will add little to no performance gains to my v6. However, adding high flow cats will add quite a bit (and still allow the car to be 50 state legal, which is always nice). Speaking strictly for performance (and $ concerns) I think I may go w/ high flow cats that run directly to the pypes dual catback (no midpipe, straight through piping). If I do my math right (and trust the performance numbers given) I should be boosted another 15-20 hp, which is exactly what I was looking for (not to mention the new roar....). What do you guys think?

One thing to keep in mind is the fact that the mufflers from Pypes are "straight through" mufflers. Will straight through piping to "straight through" mufflers sound mean, or ricey (relatively speaking... it's always gonna be a v6).

when it comes down to it....if you want a turbo setup u can still use longtubes....because they have two turbo kits available to be used either by the rear bumper or in the side scoop next to the door.......if u want it in the engine bay then shortys if N/A, Nitrous, or Supercharged Long tubes x pipe with the big power adders helps.... h pipe for the sound N/A over the Xpipe exhaust Flowmasters, MAC, Magnaflow thats all I would recommend in that order

OMG, I am a moron. Everyone keeps saying use Macs, and right now I have a single Flowpath muffler on my car (swapped it when I first got my stang about a year ago and forgot about it entirely!). So, if I buy a second mac 2 1/4 muffler (2.5 is too much for my system, and I doubt I will be going much further) and then just ask the shop to make me dual exhausts with a custom h-pipe, I should be all set to go! Wow... college, work, and hobbies... one of these things has to go....

If I buy the second mac muffler and two exhaust tips how much do you guys think it would cost for them to make me a 2.25'' system with an h-pipe (I think the local shops charges $100/hr)?

would be cheaper to buy an aftermarket off road pipe that is higher quality mandrel bent stainless steel in your case. it is a bolt on

A midpipe will give you more gains than you think, and is also a good support mod for future mods. Seeing as how your going into a larger diameter piping, a more efficient way of having the exhaust gasses flow, and less backpressure. Anything is better than the stock y-pipe you have now. You can use whatever catback you want since those won't give you any gains really. Why are you just gonna buy a muffler? Why not buy a catback, a new midpipe, and some headers? Those will give you the most beneficial gains.
