2000 v6 mustang engine problems

so my auto 2000 v6 mustang has been beat up by the previous owner (the idiot) and has about 120,000 miles on it..well every now and then it will suddenly downshift, i lose all power, exhaust noise is nonexistant, and i have to floor it to go from 0-15 and it takes forever, and it shakes ALOT. its happened 4 times, everytime i just turn the car off and start her back up and it goes away, well tonight it did it to me twice in a row and after the 2nd time my Service engine soon light came on
my dad thinks something with the electronics is screwed up. could it just be my ecu going bad or am i facing a more serious problem? i plan on taking it to Advanced auto parts tomorrow and having them check the error codes bc i heard they do it for free...any other suggestions?

At this point the best thing to do is get the codes checked. Let us know what the codes read out to be and we should be able to steer you in the right direction. Best of luck.

Have you given it a tune up (plugs, wires, and coil possible)?

Before guessing it would be good to read out the code from the OBD II system.

i talked to a mechanic friend of mine and he thinks that one of my O2 sensors is shot..could this be the culprit?

A bad 02 sensor doesn't usually cause a problem like the one you described.

I would think a TPS sensor, or something with the transmission.

But it's best to get the codes pulled.

why would something with my transmission kill half my cylinders and make it idle rough?

If it's the O2 sensor, I don't see why the transmission would downshift when the problem happens. The O2 sensor should give an OBD II code. If the engine has more than 100K miles, the O2 sensors should be replaced anyway, so you might try replacing them.

I was putting that in there because you said it would downshift randomly. I didn't mean for it to sound like the sole problem.
