Intake gains
found a cheap SSMS lower intake for sale, gonna pick that up,so 3 questions
what would be the gains with just the lower intake what could i be looking at with lower intake and a windstar upper. Then just to throw a wrench in it if anyone has done this does it pick up more after a tune? just exploring my options

it would be best if your gonna do lower to just port the top part of the lower intakes in about a inch or so until you do your heads, otherwise it is kind of defeating the purpose. But I am sure if you plan on doing your heads and you get the lower with the windstart you will see some pretty decent gains.

Well yes I do plan on doing h/c/i but I've heard that the lower intake is the most restrictive, so I'm thinking that with the windstar should be pretty decent. The cam will be down the road as this is my dd and it can't be down for more than a day or 2, but back to my original ?, should this give me some pretty good gains? Just the ssms lower? I do plan on either porting the upper or getting the windstar later, but its too good a deal to pass up

If the price is right. New from SSMS is $450. when you say it's a good deal is it less than half? If so go for it. Tough to tell actual gains but every little bit helps.

yep every little bit adds up. if it is a good deal i would definately buy it you will probably gain a couple hp from it, but then once you put either a windstar, or port your upper it will make a huge difference.

You'll gain a little, but don't expect it to be like "OH S***" or anything.

You will have to port match the heads or you will create turbulence and possiblly loose power.

so what youre saying is that i cant use the lower intake without changing out my heads, or at the very least port matching them

yes. You'll need to atleast port match. otherwise you'll have exposed surface that will impead the airflow, causing turbulance.

that sounds like a good plan. If it is a good deal, buy it and then save to port your heads. Then you can throw it on with your ported heads and then save and get a new upper. That is why i said if you do not plan on doing your heads for a bit it is best to only port into the top of the lower about an inch or so and make a taper effect. Obviously you can't do that cuz it is already fully ported. Definately get it tho, dont pass up good deals or youll be kickin yourself in the butt.

Start off with the windstar upper. And leave the lower for when you do the heads and have them matched at the same time.

I p&p'ed as well as port matched my lower intake manifold and did the windstar upper intake manifold swap, barely noticed anything. Then did a cam swap and still didn't really notice much, but then again its still running stock exhaust and I haven't gotten a tuner yet either. Sure sounds good for a v6 tho.

If you are patient, wait a couple of months. The people who do the Windstar upper are working on a special project right now. It combines the current windstar upper package with the newer windstar lower. Its supposed to give even better results than port and polishing
