Changing Trans Fluid

My V6 automatic has 40700 miles. Is this a good time to change the fluid and filter on it? Thanks

Change it. And do it asap. Mattf0509, do not change yours. If you are close to the recommend mileage, it is a good idea to change it, and most likely you will never have to do it again. On high mileage cars in which the fluid has never been changed, it is recommended to not change it.

I changed it, and replaced the filter also. Now I have peace of mind, and no worries Plus, I have no plans on selling my car. Ford also says 5000 miles for the oil, noway I will ever wait for 5000 miles. Thanks guys.

Is that for automatics and manuals alike? I know it's true for automatics, just unsure about manuals.

Some people believe that, if it hasn't been changed regularly, changing it
when long overdue can cause problems by dislodging all the friction material that has been worn away and lead to clutch failure, or at least that's my understanding.

Yeah a lot of the times the only thing keeping your tranny together is all the crud. If you drop your tanny pan and there is a lot of metal shavings and/or the oil is brown instead of red ..... dont change it.

McQueen that's for auto's, my mistake if I didn't clarify. I changed my trans fluid when I put the new clutch in (5spd, ~120k) and it works well. I'm thinking I want to have the trans rebuilt I'm at 130k now I'm sure it could do better.

i'll post pics when i get home, but the trans has a drain and a fill plug on the pass. side. its a 1/4 drive socket to get them off, drain plug first, catch the oil in a drain pan. put that drain plug back in. its easiest to remove your shifter to have clear access to the top of the trans from inside the cabin. with a length of tubing you can feed down into the fill hole, with the trans oil container upside down inside. if u cut a hole in the bottom of the container the fluid will flow nicely. i belive it is roughly 3 qts (i used royal purple automax, but would recommend mobil 1 fluids). Once the fluid is just below the fill hole its full, or as it overflows stop.
