Help Me Decide

I'm really on the fence as to what to do. I've got $3400 to spend on the car and 2 major options.

Option 1: New Paint
-The paint on the car is in sad shape. Chips of paint are missing on most body panels. The passenger door is missing at least 1/8 of the paint (it just keeps flaking off) and there's a smallish dent in the passenger quarter panel/door. There's also a decent sized chip of paint on the roof that's been peeling off more lately and a small rust spot has appeared. The previous owner didn't take care of the car except doing the bare minimum. He also had a steep driveway and managed to fuck up the front bumper pretty badly. Total cost to repaint and replace the bumper (Roush) will be $3000-$3500.

Option 2: Fuck Paint, New Parts
-While the paint and damage really bothers me and makes me wonder why I wash the car so much, I would LOVE to really get into the mods I want to do. After getting my clutch installed and windshield replaced, I'd have around $2800 to play with. Gears, tlok, tuner, upper/lower control arms, coil pack, plug wires, short throw shifter, etc. And I'd probably look into at least getting the bumper replaced although I'm not sure I'd put out the close to $500 for a Roush bumper if I'm going to wait another year + to get the car repainted.

I can't decide which I should do guys. I'm leaning towards parts but I'd also love to get the car painted so that it's not just the exhaust that makes people look at the car. Anyone like to give me their 2 cents?

you could always go supercharged for around 2k. but id feel alot better with it painted and looking good. but only do it if youre for sure keeping the car. you can take off and sell performance stuff but paint goes with the car.

Well opinions are like a$$h0!es and they all stink but anyway. If you like the shine and sparkle and you plan on showing it then paint and body would seem the logical way to proceed.
If you want to be faster (relatively speaking), and handle better, then mods are the way to go. It really all depends on what you want to do with it.
24/7 shine or sleeper mode. It's your call. Best of luck.

If you plan on keeping the car for a very long time, I'd personally go for the paint in your situation. That'll make the car look like new and ensure that rust spot doesn't get any bigger. I wouldn't want to drive my car period if i didn't like the way it looked. Then since you're happy with your car's looks you can focus all of your attention on performance ...

+1 stopping/preventing rust would be a huge priority if you want to keep the car for a while and dont want it to look like crap... not to mention with the new paint you could have it painted a different way (two toned, racing stripes, new color).

both. get a cheaper paint job and parts. I remember one of the foxbody guys got his car painted black from it being multicolored and it looked good from the pictures and i beleive it came in the entire call under 500 bucks. But a cheaper paint job would be great and they could most likely fix your bumper. Lets say your spend 1k on a new bumper and paint that will make your car look a hell of alot better and you can spend the next 2k on mods galore.

With a Simple fiberglass kit and touch up paint i have fixed my cracked hood and a small hole in my bumper and it looks pretty good.( im going to get a new hood in the spring though becuase i dont like the v6 hood)

Unless you know someone you are not going to get a decent paint job for cheap. I actually looked at a black mustang, 99 that had recently been painted by some guys friend, and i swear i could have done a better job with a can of spray paint. the paint was flaking off. If you know someone in the industry, then you maybe be able to get it done for cheap, it really all depends. As far as what you should do, i do not know, this is a really really tough situation. I love a car that looks great and goes fast. And I am sure you want both too. I do not know what to tell you.

Thanks for your opinions guys. I think I'm going to hold off on ordering any parts just yet and I'll try to get some quotes from some places around here on paint jobs. If they're all going to be really expensive I might just have the door, roof, and new bumper painted for the time being and put the rest into parts.

I think if your chop up the paint it will be more expsensive and they will neer to match the color to your faded color. If you get it all done at once you will receive a much better quality and price. Also since you live in the middle of bumblefuck( just jk Iowa is cool ) I would personaly keep asking around for good paint shops with cheaper prices, asking people in the car bussiness is how I know where to go. Best of luck!

I agree you can get a good paint job with body work for 1500 or less. Just gotta find the place or person. To the poster about the cheap black paint job that was flaking... That was due to poor prep. You can make a maaco paint job last and look good with good prep.

If it wasn't for my lack of free time (work 5-6 days a week, school 5 days a week) I'd probably take you up on that since I'm really not that far from Illinois.

I'm planning on buying a Cobra once I'm out of college and I don't want to be just learning about the car at that point

If you are serious about buying the Cobra, save that 3 grand and use it as a down payment.

I for one plan to buy a Cobra or newer GT500 when I am done with college (hopefully). I would stop modding the 6, but since I plan to keep the car I dont mind spending money on it.

I am not going to deep into performence tho for that reason.

HOWEVER, if I was in your situation, I would either paint the whole car or pain just the roof to get ride of the rust spot and use the left over money for parts.

I plan on keeping my sixxer as well. I always liked Mustangs but this is the car that really got me into them and I want to pass it on to my future children some day. I figure I can get 200k+ out of the engine and when it finally goes I'll drop in a 4.6. When I get a Cobra, I don't plan on having it be my DD.

I emailed a few companies asking for rough estimates on what they'd charge for painting the entire car. I've got a few more I'll either have to call or stop by eventually. If I can't find any better prices I'll just have the roof painted and probably the passenger door (I'm afraid it's next to start rusting) then put the rest into mods. By the way, I found an old pic of the passenger door. It's flaked off almost down to the handle now.

Sorry it's blurry, shitty phone camera.
