The lifters?

Well I was warned when I bought my car from my dad.. he noticed a a ticking sound that I thought was the TOB like on most standards and such... With further research.. I dont think its the TOB at all. Its something to do with the lifters.. was wondering if anyone could give me a better definition or understanding to what exactly these were for and if its something I should be concerned about..and if so..price range for correcting?

A camshaft is a rotating shaft that has individual lobes for each valve. The lobe is a "bump" on one side of the shaft that pushes against a valve lifter moving it up and down. When the lobe pushes against the lifter, the lifter in turn pushes the valve open. When the lobe rotates away from the lifter, the valve is closed by a spring that is attached to the valve.
Just a general idea of what lifters are. Got it from here:Automobile Engines - A Short Course on How They Work but there's really no more reading on that site about them unless you want to know more about how your engine works.

Also, my TOB is going out. It's got a nice squeak when I let the clutch out

The lifter is a hydraulic device that automatically adjusts the valves. A light ticking noise especially if it's only when the car is first started and goes away in a few minutes is normal. If it persists it may help to run the engine for a while with a quart of automatic transmission fluid mixed with 4 quarts of oil. If that doesn't help then the lifters and probably rocker arms should be replaced. I found that the stock rocker arms can wear to the stage where the lifter can't compensate any more. The cost for parts- lifters, rocker arms, and push rods will be about $350. It requires removing the upper and lower intake manifolds.

My father swears by this stuff called "Roslin" to clean lifters. you just replace 1 quart of oil with it on your next oil chang. lifters get gummed up pretty often on high miliage cars. cleaning your system could fix your problem and save you alot of money as well. or you could just have a rocker arm out of adjustment. you can get "roslin" at your local auto parts. it's in a dark red bottle.

I put 1qt of automatic trans fluid in with the oil on our 94 cherokee and it's got about 310,000mi on it. after about 500mi, the oil was changed and it does run a lot better than before. Of course I also changed the air filter and the fuel filter as well so that made a bigger difference than the auto trans fluid I'm sure. But I still do it about 500mi before every other oil change.

Wheres the ticking sound coming from? I have a ticking sound as well when I first start my car and I am looking at every possible issue before spending money.

If its a lifter, the ticking would be comming from the middle of the engine. A lot of people who here ticking find out its usually a leaky exhaust manifold.

You need to bring it into sears Saturday and let me listen to it. A lot of people mistake the famous exhaust leak for a lifter tick.

Well i have a really bad tick, more like a clank but it's not a rod knock or a loose rocker arm. Im in the process of tearing it apart, im thinking its a bent rod or broken valve
