Weird poping sound coming...

There's a weird popping sound coming from what seems to be underneath the center consoil where the cd player is.. I was reading through a post and seen exhaust leaks being common for v6 mustangs 99-04, so I was wondering is it possible that this is a exhaust leak? If so what exactly is a exhaust leak, is it like a very small hole in the exhaust or some thing, and does this hurt my car in any way?

Popping? - would not be an exhaust leak

Exhaust leak would be more like a ticking sound and it would increase with rpm...

Does an exhaust leak hurt your car? Of course it does... but its not that bad

new pipes or fiberglass exhaust patching tape warm the exhaust system wrap the tape as tight as possible and then run your car idle and let the natural combustion heat bod the fiberglass tape to the leaking area.

Well the popping doesn't get louder in increased rpm I only really notice it when I'm stopped, and it kinda sounds like a coffee maker making coffee you know that noise.

cracking

check to make sure ur engines no leaking, it could be that start of ur throwout bearing going, that doesnt really make that much of a cracking noise thu more of a grinding, and GF check where ur y/h/x pipe meets ur headers or manifold thats a common place for an exhaust leak i had one there awhile ago, check where all of ur components meet up, end of midpipe both ends of flowtubes and after the muffler(s)

I got these suggestions http://autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?UseCase=S001&UserAction=viewSimpleDiagRes ultsInfo&Parameters=Engine+Compartment|~17|~Engine +Running|~29|~Clicking|~33|~Sounds+Like|~4&FROMJSP =type

now that I think about it I started noticing the noise after I took my car in for a oil change. I just went back there last week and got another oil change and they checked every thing like wiper fluid and tires lights.... Wouldn't they have noticed that one of the oil things where damaged ?

a popping noise and a engine tap or knock are two different things lol do you have a tap or a knock or is it a popping noise that is more apparent when ur turning? and no they cant really tell those oil problems, but if it had a knock or a tap they would probably tell you. and alos are they using shitty oil i know most places dont use synthetic or even 5w-20w for that matter, also a shitty oil filter will cause a tap.
