when to tune.

After what mods do i need to retune my car? its a 5spd standard.

I am planning on getting:

CAI
65mm throttle body
true duals, im not sure on header choice yet. or what to do about cats.. (thats another thread)

thats what ill be getting first..

If i dont need a tune after those things what would you suggest next and what do i need to get a tune for.

tune will help you off the bat running 93 oct, you will get 20 or so ponies there. CAI is highly dependent on tune, throttle body idt it matter, exhaust wise if you get headers or new cats a new tune will help alot. Get a SCT tuner from Americanmuscle.com. They will email you free tunes for life .
when your unmodded get a tune to run 93 octane, when you get a cai get a tune with that, when you get headers , get a tune for that, ect.

CAI for these cars doesn't need a tune, stock MAF. Throttle body is an finisher mod, don't get that as a first mod. Exhaust and intake, go for those. You can get the tuner as well, it does help, then with a handheld and data logging or a dyno you can update the tune to whatever mods you get, as Matt said.

I just got tuned for CAI, exhaust, and 87 oct (economy) and I can feel the car running stronger than with the stock tune. Matt pretty much summed it up though, even at stock you can benefit from a 93 oct tune.

Mcqueen run off 93 man, i have a 93 proformance and 93 econ tune, 93 nitrous tune(hopefully ill get to use it soon), you get more mpg on 93 econ that 87 econ, enough to make up for the extra cence per gallon

hmm, never thought of the mpgs lol. i may have to do a test this summer and compare and figure out which is better. either way a 91 or 93 octane tune will give you further performance.

Yeah besides the mpg its always nice to switch between your econ tune and 93 profromance tune without being concerned about what fuel is in the car.

I planned on running 93 but I forgot about ordering an economy tune (I ordered the 87 just because I needed a tune before they'd ship the tuner). Plus we got a bunch of snow, I was low on gas, couldn't get too far so I just threw on the 87 tune and filled up. I don't want to push my baby too hard (93 performance) until I get her tuned up this spring but I'll get the 93 economy ordered today and put that on next time I fill up.

This is only true if you buy a part from them that requires a tune. This isn't a bad thing considering a lot of things are purchased there, but then think about if you have a good deal on used headers, used P&P intakes, etc.

Just tell them you need a new econ tune or something and that will give you the option to acess a tune fourm which you can fill out with whatever you have. But this isnt true becuase I have gotten nitrous tunes from then even though The only proformance part I have bought from them was the tuner itself.

+1. Only part I've bought from them that would need a tuner is my gears (which need to get installed) and I just sent in my request for a 3rd tune.

Btw Matt, do their tunes set your idle to 950-1000rpm? I noticed my car has been idling right around there since I tuned it. Forgot to check what the idle was set at when I was looking through the adjustable options earlier.

That seems a little high for your idle, which all it does is just use more gas. Mines an auto though, and it idles a little above 750 when warm, stock or 93 tune. I'll have to bump it up to around 900 to get a good idle with my cam though.

Oh and 20hp for 93 oct tune is a bit on the high side. I'd say around 10, but it does feel like more.

Yeah mine was idling right around 750 before the tune. I'll have to play with the options and turn in down a bit.

A Sct Add In a Magazine Shows 20 Rwhp Gain on a V6. Ive seen another sorce that says 19 Rwhp But That is stick. -5% of that for auto.

yeah those in the magazines aren't accurate. I think on the S197 they got 8 or 9 hp with the performance tune on a dyno, and those are usually more responsive than ours when it comes to those little things. I can't say for sure though, cause I've never seen a dyno with just a tuner.
