4.2 Crank

Ok, so I have been looking at different cranks and it seems all of the 4.2 cranks are not forged? They say cast, not forged? Also I plan on building a car for nitrous. Would a crank from a 4.2 pickup work? I mean be tough enough to handle the instant torque?

Regular 4.2L crank from F-150 is fine for anything. I think either J or Gary was running one at 660+rwhp without any issues. Eventually maybe crank walk, but that isn't the toughness of the crank.

Forged 4.2L crank isn't worth it IMO. No one has broken a cast 4.2L crank to date that I know of.

ok, thanks. i was curious. because i would think it would be easier to find a cheap 4.2 pickup crank then buying one from ssms. i know i will have to go there for the rods and pistons but still every little penny saved adds up.

SSMS crank or New 4.2L crank from ford are the same thing, and going to cost you the same money.

If you want something 100% reliable then I don't advise grabbing a crank out of a junk yard vehicle unless you plan on having it prep'd afterward.

fast/cheap/reliable

You sound like your on the fast/cheap route, thats the one that leaves you calling triple A.

not really, but if you know people at machine shops and engine building shops so you can get good deals on if it needs to be undersized and balanced it pays to buy a used crank.

No you don't. David Dalke sells Wiseco pistons for half of what SSM charges. There are other's out there cheaper as well.

He also sells h-beam rods for less. Don't just assume that the only place to get parts from is Super(high priced) Six Motorsports.

You have to use the sc crank and bearings to use that setup.
I've spoke with dave and he quoted me a price around 1000 less than ssm quoted me for the price of a built short block. It included cam of my choice along with degreeing it. Really good deal. I may do this when the time is comes.

You can use either the stock replacement C.A.T. Power rod 5.915 or what was previously used, which was a 351 Windsor rod 5.955. Either way, the pistons are made for the rod being used.

The C.A.T. rods are about $360 while other manufactureres Winsor rods (S.C.A.T. or Eagle) are about $460.

If you retain the 3.8 crank from an SC, it is also forged.

A crank for $300 or the whole motor. All the cranks are the same.

Interesting, so what does the total price come out for a build short block using the o.e. wiesco's and scat rods?

That depends. Are you studding the mains, using mls gaskets, new timing chain etc.? So basically, it depends on the parts.

The pistons through SCU are $75 for an SC piston and I can't see it being more for an N/A. C.A.T. b beam rods are $360. SCAT rods are $466 with 8740 bolts. David used to sell them for $300 a set. Not sure how much now.

MLS gaskets are about $80 a pop. Timing chain is about $40. The machine work depends on your shop.
