Cutting Exhaust

Has anyone cut the exhaust on a stock v6 right after the muffler? I'm not trying to get power out of it I know I won't. But 1. my pipe is all rusted at the end and looks horrible and 2. I thought it might have a little better sound. No money right now to do duals so just trying to help the sound. Thanks.

I can't see it changing the sound a whole lot nor messing with your power. Is the tail pipe rusted all the way back to the muffler (enough to justify cutting it all off)? If not, I wouldn't cut it that far. The farther back you get the exhaust, the less you'll have getting into the cabin with you (and trust me, that shit gives you a nasty headache and makes you want to vomit).

Well it was mainly because it looks like garbage showing under the bumper all rusted. So till I got a new exhaust I was thinking of cutting it right before or after axle.

I'd cut it after the axle. Do any of your local auto parts stores sell just the tips? If so you could just pick up a chrome tip, cut the rusted part off, and put the new tip on. It would look much better than looking like you have no exhaust And I don't think a new tip should cost much.

I was kinda hoping davisac is good with tools and has access to welder. From what he's saying I assume he's going to be cutting the exhaust off by himself.

I was hoping to dremel it or something like that if it was easy to get to. Negative on the welding though.

It should be very simple to get to, depending on where you cut of course. I think there may be a hanger after the muffler so you'll need to be careful of how short you cut it. Dragging your exhaust around is no good

if you can't afford the exhaust now...just sand the rusted tip..and spray it with a $5 can of rustoleum high heat black (Advance Auto or any others)...cutting it is a waste right now..

on my car i didn't want tips or anything like you see on most sixxers...so i had turndowns installed...the left side looks OEM and now has a mirror image on the passenger side (if OEM had 2.5" tubing)...an i just painted the metal black to make it look better

i cut my exaust right after the muffle and put turndowns on and no complaints here. If you sit and idle you will smell some but i dont sit and idle! i have flowmaster 40s and it did make it a little louder. My pipes were fudged up after the muffler though so if yours are good dont cut! i like the black paint its sharp.

i cut mine off in front of the muffler and clamped a flowmaster 44 on it. didnt sound good with no tailpipe, so i put a 90 degree downturn on it. it fit in front of the axle and i think it sounds quite alright.

I really like the black exhaust guys. I might just do that to mine. The salt has been hell on the chrome this winter so I'm thinking black would be a nice touch
