Opinions on this Combination

So I was reading about gears and was trying to decide if this was the next mod I wanted to do. I finally decided it was, I hear the 4.10 is the ideal gears for an automatic. I found this combination on AM and was wondering what you thought about it because I also saw where they have like 4.56 gears and didn't know how much of a difference it would make.

Ford Racing 4.10 Gears and SCT SF3 PowerFlash Tuner Kit at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!

Also, is that a decent tuner?

dont get those gears those are for the v8 rearend. You have the 7.5 inch rearend that is one thing to make sure when you buy them, you will likely only find 3.73 or 4.10 for the 7.5. As far as the tuner the xcal3 is a great tuner!

oh ok, that's what I was wondering, they don't have a v6 combination like that, but if you buy them separately for the v6 it's not much price difference! especially with our discount. i'll check into the v6 ones in a few mins and see which ones would be better.

Np man, ill rep you cuase ur cool. Yeah the tuner+ gears + tlok will be sick
Its about 300 bucks to install the tlok and gears keep that in mind. So youll be looking at about 1000 bucks for all, but a tuner is needed to reset your speedometer. Im getting gears when I have the money which will be another month so im jelous haha

Installation of the tuner is 1 but The differntial and gears should be pretty hard, get it done at a shop right.

oh don't be jealous yet, I haven't bought anything so far i'm just planning for next few weeks. but I decided I wanted to go performance mod next because the looks of the car is pretty good and I don't know what I wanna do to the outside quite yet.

As for the getting it done at the shop, I will definitely do that, it's just so hard to find a "honest" shop around here.

also thanks for the rep

And on a scale of 1-10 I would honestly say a 7 or 8. It is pretty difficult to do it correctly. And even good shops have a tough time sometimes. To get them to not make any noise is difficult there are a lot of factors. But most shops should do a good job with it.

I wouldn't. You're probably not going to find some large chain company that's willing to do a gear install either. I've been using a Goodyear for years for just basic things my previous cars needed, but when I called them about a clutch and gears they said they wouldn't touch it. Look for performance shops (aka speed shops) around your area. If they have a website they generally like to show off some of the projects they've worked on and you can probably get a decent idea of the kind of work they do from that.

This reminds me I need to start calling around to get some more quotes for getting my clutch, tlok, and gears installed..

Along the same lines... I was told today that I needed a rear differential (supposedly "scheduled maintenance" at 150,000 for my 99). What do you think is the best way to go for me? Since I "have" to do it, I wanna make it worth while!

I have no idea what comes stock on my 99 V6, that's kinda why I'm asking this here. I also have no idea what my best option for upgrade would be, which is the other reason I'm asking here... Maybe I should start my own thread, but it just seems like such a waste!

i'm pretty sure you don't have 4.10 gears because if so why would upgrading to 4.10 gears be a good thing for us

I believe they're 3.31's though

Sounds good man. Even if you gotta pay a little more, at least you'll feel good knowing it's being done by someone you trust.

Just go with the 7.5" Trac-Lok (aka limited slip differential) from AmericanMuscle.com. Right now you have an open differential. If you go and do a burnout you'll see a very nice black mark from your rear passenger tire, but not a whole lot from your driver's side rear tire. This means most of your power is being put on that one wheel. With the tlok, your power will be divided between both wheels and and will increase your traction quite a bit. I've heard it's quite nice for winter driving. Too bad my tlok is sitting in its box

Originally Posted by 97greenstang View Post

I'm not quite sure what you're asking but I'll toss you some info and hopefully you can pull out the info you're looking for. Our cars came with 3.27 gears, stock. Doesn't matter if you got a 4 speed auto or a 5 speed manual. You'll often see people recommend 4.10 gears to auto and 3.73 gears to manuals. This is because the steeper the gear ratio, the sooner you'll have to shift. 5 speed manuals will eat up 1st gear in no time, even for daily driving. But a 4 speed auto can eat it up as well and keep on trucking without the driver having to do anything but keep his foot on the gas. Now if you put 3.73 gears in a 5 speed manual you'll find your take offs are quicker than stock but not as quick as 4.10s. The biggest difference is you won't have to shift as soon. With a 4 speed auto, it works the same way as the 4.10s. Keep your foot on the gas and keep on going. Seeing as how you don't have to shift, the 4.10 gears are a much better choice for a naturally aspirated (N/A) engine. But if you ever plan on going forced induction (F/I) I think it's recommended for both 5 speed manuals and 4 speed autos to stick with the 3.73 gears.

Hopefully some bit of that helped.
