Oil Leak
Seems to be on coming from front of crank as oil was visable on the underside of the front of the engine. What should I aim at replacing or is a full rebuild probably the best overall thing to do? 131k on her now. Drives great, all maintenance is kept religiously. Had to top off the oil twice in the past couple of months as the dip stick read low. Never had to do that before so this is a new issue. Thanks guys.

Not that much, no spots on the ground yet at all that I've noticed, only collecting on the underside of the motor. As said in the past 6 to 8 weeks I've topped the oil off twice, first time was about a qt. and a 1/4, but that was so low because the previouos oil change I don't think I checked the level, just put in 5 qts, stupid move rushing the job but it was probably low from then, so I was running really low, but that wasn't for long at all. Second time was just today and it was the remaing 3/4 qt. and the oil is now on the high side of middle.
Cliffnote: It's not leaking that much.

If it is coming out of the crank seal, it's a little job getting the front engine cover off. You might as well do a cam if you're in there lol. You get a gasket kit for water pump, oil pump, engine front cover, and the crank seal together for less than $20.
It's nothing complicated, just time consuming. Took me about 6 hours or so But that's doing other random stuff, too like some valve springs and the cam. |

How dare you! These are beautiful pieces of machinery, sex on wheels.
But yeah there's always small amounts, but this is more than ever before, and you shouldn't have to top off your oil between changes. So I'll get this gasket kit and do that job, with the milage its expected, I've replaced and/or done maintenance on everything besides the motor internals, never have had to get into it at all. Thanks for that, reps.

I did my cam when I replaced mine as well and it is a very straight forward easy job, but also very time consuming. Especially getting the crank pulley off for the first time. My front engine cover was also on pretty damn well. not really any good place to pry on it that I was comfortable but I eventually got it off without breaking anything. I definitely took my time. All in all it was atleast 4hrs. Last edited by winnie51189; February 22nd, 2010 at 09:10 PM. |

Oh, and by the way, if you have a steering wheel/other crank puller, you can use that to take off the crank pulley and just bump it back on or tighten with a ratchet. And I just took off the power steering/alt bracket to avoid taking off that pulley and to get it out of the way. As long as your compression is fine, that's all you should need to do.
If you run into problems, just ask. I just had it all apart so I'm familiar with it at the moment. |
