IAC Restrictor Plate And Spark Plug Gap Questions

1. I've been having issues with my idle since I bought my car. Sometimes it idles around 2000 RPM (it's idled at 3500 RPM once) or as low as 500 RPM. Since I got my tune I've noticed it idling high more often and the RPMs hang between shifts. I've got an IAC restrictor plate on the way but before I want to make sure it's not going to make me stall out when the car decides to idle too low. Note: I have cleaned the IAC but to no avail. I still need to clean th MAF but I'm not getting my hopes up

2. I was hoping to put my spark plugs in and change the wires today but it's about 5 degrees out and I have no heater in my garage. So I'm settling for at least getting the spark plugs gapped. I got the circular disk style gap tool and I'm wondering how exactly I measure the gap with it. I've been playing with one plug and I can get it on the .052 spot (Haynes manual says .052 although I know some of you gap it to .054) with a bit of resistance but when I get it to touch the raised inner circle (that has all the numbers) it moves pretty freely. Where exactly do I want the resistance to show that it's gapped to specifications?

Basically right at the number you're aiming at. As in it shouldn't move past that without resistance showing that it isn't that wide. Basically have it between .052 and .054, the latter being the high end, such a small difference depending on where you actually have the plug its all basically the same.

Yeah when you ask for plugs for your car when you buy them, they come gapped properly, but it's just a good idea to make sure they are correct.

I ordered my plugs online and they came gapped at ~.058-.060 so they were pretty close but I've got them gapped down to the .052-.054 range.

I would always double check the plugs from the factory, you never know if some get dropped or bumped and your gap can be off. It is just a simple little test that you should check. Also my car does the same thing with the idle. Right now it idles like it is cammed sometimes and almost dies and then races up. What is an IAC Restrictor plate?

Mine does that too but a lot of times when I shift it'll take a few seconds for my RPMs to come back down. An IAC restrictor plate is basically a metal IAC gasket but with the holes drilled smaller. Let's less air in at idle so when you put the clutch in the RPMs should drop quicker. I'm worried about my sitting still idle and my imaginary cams. I think if I put the restrictor plate on I'll end up stalling a lot when I'm sitting at stop lights.

I've never seen a plate that had both holes the same size. I thought one of the holes was supposed to be ~3/8''

Eh, we'll see how it works. If it turns out like shit, I'm only out $4 Do I need to use a normal IAC gasket with the restrictor plate?

I bought another IAC gasket and sandwiched the plate between the two of them.

Don't get too discouraged if it doesn't work perfectly. When I bought mine, the hole was too large, so I used it as a template and made my own. I had to change the hole size a few times before I got it to where I wanted it.

In that case maybe it's a good thing both holes are the same size. They both look damn small to me so if it runs like shit I could just keep drilling the hole bigger until I find a sweet spot.

Yeah, but it depends on what size they already are. I think the one I bought was 5/16'' and that was too big so I had to make my own. I'm either using a 7/32'' or 1/4'' right now, but I can't remember.

this is a cool idea. my car has no engine braking which is annoying as hell when driving in traffic. i guess theyve got the iac open on decel? if so this would certainly help.

Mcqueen and/or code have you tried replacing the entire IAC to solve the ideling issue?

that it is, along with a home p@p lower, gasket matched heads, 216/226 108 lsa cam at .500 lift. It should be a big difference in power with a good datalogged tune.

EDIT: and as far as replacing the IAC, no I have not tried replacing it. Mine is not to bad, it gets bad when I retune, then after I let the tune run for a bit it is like the computer adjusts and it gets better, it still does it a little but not near as bad.
