small like 1.5"x 1.5". I might not be 100% but they are nowhere as big as the frame leads them to look.

anything above 5.25" will require a mounting plate but most components come with the plate you would need. I put my 6.5" Alpine type-x components in the doors with the adapter plate they came with and they fit perfect.

I've had good luck with crutchfield. You can enter the specifics for your car and they will give you a list of what will fit. They even supply mounting brackets if needed and wiring harnesses which are REALLY helpful (very little if any splicing).

When you get some time, you may want to pick up a soldering iron and some solder (Wal-Mart has a cheap soldering iron that should do the trick) and put some solder on the areas that you twisted the wiring together. I wired my footwell LEDs the same way and I've got one coming loose already. Not to mention your speakers vibrate more than my lights so there will be more stress on the joints.

crutchfield says 2-40 watts RMS recommended so i dont think that its the power. mine are 100 watts RMS till i get money for an amp and their doing "ok".

what about the polarity of the wires sure thats ok? i assume the speakers before were working fine?

you dont have a volt meter thing do you? it sounds like your head unit is powering too much and getting to its limits causing distortion or loss of power. how loud are you playing?
