Wires and plugs.
My car is in fact a '98. I was thinking today about changing the wires and plugs. The car only has 68k on it but then again the plugs and wires are 12 years old. They seem to be doing fine but I was wondering if putting in some newer stuff would make any difference. I was just thinking the the wires and plugs today would have to be better then they were 12 years ago maybe.

I'm sure there have been some improvements in plugs/wires over the years but people mostly recommend good old Motorcraft/Autolite copper plugs which probably haven't seen much improvement over the years. But putting in new plugs will reduce the risk of anything going wrong with the plugs leading to misfires and whatnot. Same with replacing the wires (which crack over time and let the some of the spark out before it gets to the plug).
Now there's also the option of upgrading to platinum or iridium plugs but there's really no reason to do that aside from extended life. I bought iridium plugs (NGK - I know I shouldn't have but they're running pretty well) and for the cost, I might as well have bought 3 sets of copper plugs. As far as wires go, I think the stock wires are 7.5mm or 8mm. Either way, you can upgrade to 8mm, 8.5mm, 9mm, etc but there's really no reason to. The only reason I can see to do that would be to get the colorful wires (I didn't really see any color 8mm wires in my short search) but I think with the stock wire size you should be getting plenty of spark as long as the wires are in good condition. Edit: Also, you're supposed to check/replace your spark plugs every 60,000 miles. I don't think copper plugs last that long though. Then again, who doesn't enjoy a good excuse to go work on their car?
