Gears for my 02' Auto

Hey guys,
I've been reading up on gears and tloks for our mustangs and how it's the best upgrade you could do for your v6. I know that 4.10 gears are best for autos, but what's the downside of getting 3.73, if there are any? Also, do getting new gears and tlok go hand in hand or is it fine just to get the gears. Any info and help would be appreciated.

mmm well new gears mean better acceleration, the tlok is better to get at the same time because it gets rid of that one wheel stuff ford decided to do....the main difference b/w 3.73 and 4.10's are the higher the gear the better acceleration and less mpg I believe...but if you get the gears now and the tlok later the downside is paying twice as much for labor really cuz they have to take the rear out twice

4.10 Better acceleration, less top speed. With more power may cause more spin. Lose a little highway Mpg but gain city mpg.
3.73 Good acceleration , not as limited top speed. Not as much spin with higher power. More time between gears for poweradders.

3.73 is recommened if you do a poweradder or use it to drive on the highway and dont wanna guzzle gas. Go with 4.10s and go balls out, some people regret only going 3.73. Either or you should get a good gain with tlok+ gears. ..... But go 4.10

I have 4:10s and love them. Lil loud on the highway, which means i can't go 75 - 80 like i used to. Now, I gotta stay around 60-65.

you mean because we are governed at 115? Yes. If you shut it off and compare mph to rpm with stock and 4:10, then you will def see a difference. But yeah, you don't need to be going that fast. My car still has O/D at the end of the 1/4 mile going 100mph.

Thnx for the input..I'm gonna go ahead with the 4.10s and the t-lok, what do you think the labor for parts installed would run typically around or is the installation easy enough that a car mechanic buddy of mine and me could do it...

I thought I could snag everthing for 500

But the downlow
Gears 170
Tlok 200
Bearing kit 80 (you need this)
Install 250-350
750- 850.

I am going with the same thing as you but I am doing Yukon gears (I am told them wine less) for 220 and an flat rate of installing for 250.

And I think he means since hes at 2500-3000ish rpms its his exhuast which is loud becuase alot of exhuasts have a loud drone at those rpms.

Ah, I see. Yeah I figured I could run the parts and labor for bout 600, but 750-800 is prob right, I'll have to check around my town for some estimates. I'm most likely gonna buy them from AR because of previous purchases but I'll definately check out the Yukon. The bearing kit is a must...huh kinda like extra insurance

Bearing kit puts the ease on the installer and makes it quicker to put everything in. You will get crazy estimates just a heads up. My Esitmates where 250,350,500,800,1000. Just for Installation my parts, so keep looking.

no, its just my RPMs would be around 3500+ at 75-80, and your car won't last long running those rpms for long periods of time. I'm at about 2500 doing 60-65, which is acceptable.

eh, according to everyone, every type of gears whine, its all about how they are installed with backlash and such. Ive been told my motive gears are the worst, and i haven't heard a peep out of them (knock on wood)

ya it has a lot to do with the install, but the manufacturer does have some. a little whine is nothing bad. and as far as your bearing kit, yes you want it for the 7.5 and make sure the gears and tlok are both for the 7.5 as well.
