question on power steering pump

Well while I was working I started hearing a mild whining noise coming from my engine. I figured I would just not think about it and look at it tomorrow morning, then about 2 deliveries later I was turning the wheel while I was not moving and heard some bad noises coming from it, they were kind of like sqeaking noises is the best I could describe it and it seemed very slightly harder to turn the wheel and the noises got worse at some points. Is this my power steering pump going bad? That was my first guess and I am most likely just going to replace it tomorrow. I just wanted a second opinion on it quick. Thanks

Also where is it? I just was a general idea before I start following hoses around lol.

Check your powersteering fluid first. This happended to me, One day i got into my car and drove to my local 7-11 and halfway there my steering stopped working lol, i managed to get home and there was like no fluid left, there was none under the car and i filled it up and its been fine since. It s the weirdest thing thats happened to me on my car. I have no idea where the fluid went or how it got out lol.

I looked at it the other day while I was checking all the other fluids and it was full but I will look again. But do those sounds call for a failing pump? Its almost like a mix of squeaking/winding noises while turning the wheel that get worse as I keep turning.

EDIT: also if I do buy a new pump tomorrow would I be able to get away with buying one without a reservoir and just use the old one?

Well these noises just started today, I have never noticed them before and for the last couple days I have been checking for things like that. I know they make the noises under the hood like that but this sounds like its almost coming straight from the steering wheel lol, I know its not but it was just the best to describe it.

same thing was happening to me. The liquid was nasty black, I would change the liquid and about a day later the liquid was black again. I change the pump entirely about 2 months ago. sadly though, with a full flush and bleed the car still makes that damn whine. maybe they sold me a faulty pump. but it is very annoying and takes away from the nice sound of the engine.

Its a somewhat common issue with out power steering pumps. Usually air gets into the system and causes the whine. Either that or its failing.

If it only happens when you turn its more than likely your pump. If its happening all the time and gets louder under load it could be your belt.
