new 98 stang. question about automatic transmissions ^_^

Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum. I just recently bought a V6 mustang. I'm new to automatic transmissions and I seem to be doing something wrong when accelerating quickly. The car is fast (got a bunch of mods, and its supercharged + nos) and it seems to be down shifting to accelerate more quickly when I push it hard. I understand this is normal behavior but it seems right around 50-60 mph when I'm at about 5k rpms it doesn't want to shift up and I don't want to push it too far into the red either... Any suggestions/advice would be helpful, thanks!

(I took it to a shop this morning to have the transmission checked out, just in case but I think it's a driver issue)

edit: I would post pics but since I'm a new member the forum won't let me yet.

umm you could be in your overdrive gear which is a gas saving gear, try turning overdrive off (little grey button on your shifter) but it will only be a 3 speed then. Also with the power you talk about a shift kit is something you probably wanna look into.
http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums...s-vt15137.html

that will also give you some info on the auto tranny.

And one last thing cause guys on here will bust your balls for this. NOS is a brand you have a nitrous equipped car lol.

I'm assuming when you are driving, you have the car in drive? Because if you have it in low gear (on shifter it will say 2, 3) the car will run higher rpms before you shift. If that's not the problem and your car has overdrive in it, that may not be set and your car will run higher rpms. If you can be a little more specific, that will narrow down potential problems and/or driver issues.

Haha, thanks Green, I didn't know that but the nitrous I have equipped is actually the brand name "nos" too.

I'll have to check but I may have a shift kit already installed. I know, I'm a huge n00b. My name on here is "lolfast" because my friend made fun of me for buying a car I don't know much about, I replied that it was fast (and a mustang) and that was good enough for me. Although I do want to learn too.

@breakout
I have the problem when I manu shift it from '1>2>D', usually the issue is switching between '2>D' or when I am just in 'D' and accelerating hard.

As far as the overdrive I am really not sure but I will check as soon as I get it back from the shop.

Those spark plug wires are they MSD or Livewires? I know it's offtopic.

Good lookin stang there. I love the 98...I'm a little bias to it.

well if you are having the problem manually shifting then you don't have a shift kit. PLus if your going to manually shift you need a shift kit and a aftermarket shifter to give you access to all your gears.

haha, not sure...
This is the list of specs the guy sent me via email before I bought it (if it doesn't answer your question tell me how I find out and I will cause I'm learning!)

--------------------------------
List of Mods to the car:

Vortech V1 SC 3.12 pully Supercharger

Spearco Intercooler
(cools the compressed air after it comes out of the supercharger. (air to air)

NXExpress 75 shot
(nitrous, ~65 hp boost)

Nology wires with iridium plugs
(less resistance, stronger spark)

3.45 gears w/traction lock
(The different gears are the final torque multiplier, going to a lower ratio gets you off the line faster. THe traction lock (limited slip differential) keeps the car from just spinning on one tire. If one tire loses traction torque is transferred to the tire with traction.

Vortech mondo bypass valve
(releases boost when you shift, the pressure you be hazardous otherwise.)

lightining80maf
(measures more air going into the engine)

42lb injectors

255 Walbro fuel pump
(feeds more fuel to the engine)

jba headers
(scavenges exhaust gasses more effeciently)

custom h with 3 chamber flows with 3.5 tips
(allows more exhaust flow)

SCT chip tuned by jba
(chip contains all the programming for the engine so it handles extra air and fuel properly)

Cobra style hood
(supercharger wouldn't fit under the stock hood)

------------------------------------

As to the problem I mentioned earlier the transmission shop I took it into said that the timing on the shifting was a bit off and I should take it to a performance place to get it tuned up a bit. I'm about to go out for a drive and see how turning off the overdrive works like Green suggested. Those after market shifters look pretty cool Green, how much do they run at with installation?

I couldn't find pricing for the shift kit online, what do they run at? And is that something I can figure out how to install myself (without getting too frustrated)?

out of curiousity how many miles does it have and how much did you pay? also you may want to get it dyno tuned for best results, since it has merely a chip. nice looking car and you said you have Nos but he says NXExpress

Umm a full shift kit will be about 650 including install, and the only thing you could install yourself would be the shifter.

haha, I was under the impression they were the same thing, feel free to laugh at me as long as you explain the difference =p

It has 87k miles on it and I paid 3k in cash (his original asking price was 6500)

Where can I get it dyno tuned and how much does it cost?

The shift kit sounds fairly reasonable. I take it, I buy or at least pick out what I want before taking it to the shop?

dyno tune is usually 250 bucks and search speed shops in the zip code on google and any of those places can probably do it.
