Worth it?

Ok, I am doing the windstar swap here maybe this weekend, if not then the following weekend. My question is would it be worth it while I have the upper intake off to remove the lower. Then remove the IMRCs and port it all the way through. Then just gasket match the heads on the car? Will the gains be worth it for the work I put into porting the lower? My thoughts are since the upper will be flowing better due to the new windstar, why not open up the lower. And just gasket match the heads, because our heads flow fine for a stock cammed v6

I haven't put on my SSM lower intake yet, but I'm sure if you know what you're doing it would be good to port the lower while you're in there. Since I didn't do it when I swapped on my Windstar, I've got to take it all apart again now to install my lower. I got really good numbers with my stock lower and stock heads, and I'm sure the ported lower and ported heads would've only made the numbers that much better.

Short version: If you know what you're doing, I don't see how it'll hurt it to free up the airflow even more.

OK, well I will look at it and see how much time I am going to have.

I want to do it but this is only going to be my 2nd port job so it will take longer because I will have to take my sweet old time so i don't mess anything up, better to go slow and do it right then rush and mess it up.

I dont have any pics. But I have a black and decor variable speed electric dremil. It has the long attachment that is flexible. I got a case full of different sanding discs and different cutting attachments. I have probably 10-20 different cutting attachments and close to 100 sanding discs and different sanding and polishing tips and sanding tips both cone shaped and cylinder shaped.

Is this enough? I know I have read to use a air tool but this thing has plenty of power and the speed is easily varied.

well i dont think you have the right tools to do a full port. you dont always need air. i used a electric makita at the house to do my heads. cost about 100.00. its pretty handy if dont have air. iam lookiing for a picture

I wont be able to get a picture for a bit, I am not at home yet and that is where my tools are at. Well what all would it take to do a full port job on just the lower intake? I know I would have to remove the IMRCs just for the ease. And then I would plan on gasket matching the heads on the car just a half inch in or so just so the ports line up.

To be honest...I would leave the imrc's in til your ready to make more power. You are going to loose low end tq and going to need a custom tune.

I'm still running mine but thats all about to change. I'm ditching mine because I now have a high tq converter...when I floor the gas...my imrc's are open.

The real question is do you have enough experience to start messing with your lower intake, and if you mess up do you have another vehicle to drive or lower intake to replace it with.

Once you get it off just look to see whats going on...you will know.

If you do the heads make sure you remove all material from the port once your finished. We used axle grease and a powerful shop vac along with rags.

I am going to take a look at it when I take it off. And I think for some more practice I am going to try on the upper intake first. That way if I mess up I will at least have my windstar to install. And if I do a half way decent job maybe I can make some money back by selling it.

And blue, I have bits that look like those cutters, except I don't have round cutters like you have. I only have the cylinder cutter and like cone shaped ones.

Maybe I will just try to smooth it out a little using some of the sanding bits. And maybe I will look into buying a 1/4 shank electric dremel. I would really be interested in getting into doing some porting. I am currently enrolled for an automotive technician program in college and I love going fast and everything associated with a well built motor. I prolly won't get the electric 1/4 for a bit cuz money is tight. And thanks for offering the bit even though it won't work.
