You mean the air tubing?
If that is what you mean then your car won't start let alone run.

I mean the snorkle that runs down into the fender to drag cool air up. Not the maf or the intake tube.

Well it wouldn't help you any honestly.
Just get rid of the air silencer if anything.

I just removed the silencer. I'll buy a CAI in the future for the clean look but that'll be when I do my split port swap.

Ya, just install a CAI.

But, just to warn you, if you live in CA you will not pass the "visual" part of smog inspection w/ a cheap CIA. (The expensive K&N and the like do pass....they paid lots of $$ to CA to have their systems 'CA approved'....the cheap ones are not considered 'up-to-code').

That said, I was able to find a smog check guy who looked the other way on this. It cost me $20 more than my usual mechanic, but to me it was worth it not to switch back to the stock intake just for smog check.

So, make sure you save your stock intake just in case you need to put it back on for smog checks and stuff. Other than that you are good to go. Hell, I get better MPG (although slightly, but every bit helps) and a very slight increase in power and very slight better sound w/ my cheap CIA.....but most of all it just looks cool.

If you do a split swap just get a windstar. Don't bother with a CIA cuase the windstar is better. And $40 extra towards a WS is better than $0 to a WS.

IMO...

It's only worth it to remove that snorkel if it's a restriction. Elsewise, it's making sure that your motor is getting the coolest intake charge it can, and to move where the air is being consumed from is likely to increase temperature, and thusly cost you power.

OP, not sure where you're from, but as Pacific said, if you're in Cali, you'll need to make sure any parts are CARB approved to pass emissions.

In my opinion, the gains from a "full" CAI setup aren't really worth the price, especially when compared to a simple drop-in filter like a K&N.
