A/C Died...

I've never had to work on an A/C unit before.

I'm about 3 hours from home down in Texas right now and I was driving along and noticed my air got a lot hotter.. pulled over.. there is green / yellow liquid all over my CAI and the area around the compressor...

Where should I start with this? Original motor and ac compressor, 55 thousand miles on them.. is it more likely a line bust or something to do with the compressor?

Any known issues with these systems I should look at first?

Update: the line that runs close to the air filter had insulation on it that was cut. I removed it and noticed scuffs/scratches and a velcro / adhesive strip over this area. I guess they tried to.. patch it with this? IDK. I've been running the A/C for 12k miles without it exploding... anyone know the name of this part, can't find it on autozone.com --- gotta drive home (3 hours..) and will deal with it later int he week.

Try stopping by ford and having them identify the part for you.

OK The hose that ruptured was the condensor to compressor.. I went to Firestone and they say the K&N filter I have brushed against it.. but I tried.. the filter is physically incapable of touching the hose. I think the previous owner just messed it up because i found some kind of adhesive patch near it.

Anyway.

Firestone wants me to replace:
Drier / Accumulator (33034)
Fixed Orifice Tube (8639)
Suction and Discharge Assembly (56382)

As far as labor.. they want about $250 total. Is this reasonable?

Remove and replace evap - $51
Remove and replace accumulator - $42.50
Remove/Replace A/C hose - $51
Charge A/C system - $119

I'm sourcing all the parts elsewhere for about 50% of stealership cost... just wanted to see what you guys thought of the labor.. I may be able to do some of it myself in an effort to save a little cash.. or with some direction perhaps I could get by just having them recharge / evacuate the system..

Heat index is 105+ right now... no A/C sucks.

$119 for a recharge sounds kind of pricey. Mine was $60 when I had it recharged at a smaller shop.

So.. after my second week with heat index over 115 degrees.. I'm getting this fixed.

Anyone have any ideas as far as securing my K&N intake so that it doesn't just bang against my line and bust it again? I'm pretty sure the kit came with mounting hardware but the idiot previous owner I'm sure didn't bother.

even if it isnt really secure it wont put a hole in your ac line. They probably did that putting the cai in somehow.

I am now having to replace both A/C lines that connect to the condenser as well as the accumulator and orifice tube. I got the new A/C lines for a total of $70, and the other two parts from RockAuto for around $50.

One of my parts shipped to the wrong address (my fault).. and I'm trying to get ahold of it.

I found a shop in Little Rock that will install and recharge for $150 total including labor and refrigerant.

One of the damages is definitely from someone working on it.. but one of them is where the cone filter is banging against it..

The filter's metal edges were resting against the elbow of one of the lines. That exact spot is where the hole is at, and subsequently.. after several months of my driving the car, it ruptured. I blew in the hole, and heard the air come out of the pipe.

Sorry to revive this thread, but wanted to mention that if anyone else runs into this issue.. removing the a/c lines is really simple.. remove the air filter assembly, there are a few bolts, and you'll need the A/C / Fuel line disconnect kit from any local auto parts store.

OEM/5/16, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 and 7/8 in. A/C and fuel line disconnect tool set (25052) | Line Disconnect Tool | AutoZone.com

Now I'll just pay to have the system evacuated and recharged. Also, replaced the incomplete K&N SRI with a CAI.
