overheated engine?

i just got my car this week, and it drove fine but today my dad decided to take it for a drive n when he got back,, the thermostat was all the way up and it was leaking antifreeze. i shut the car off, n let it sit for a while n when i started it back up, the antifreeze/coolant like oozed out of the overflow tank and was steeming and the temperature gauge was in the red zone
