Throttle Cable Replacement

Hello Everyone,

I recently bought a 2000 V6 Mustang and I couldnt be happier; however, just last week my throttle cable snapped. It was due to improper material used to fix the slack issue that this mustang is known for on the gas pedal. It was rubbing against the zip ties that the previous owner installed and it ended up snapping.

My local ford dealer told me that the part I need - XR3Z-9A758-AA - is obsolete. I cant find this part if my life depended on it. I ended buying something similar. This part does not fit at all but it does have the same end as the old cable (refer to pictures below). I was wondering, do you guys think it's possible for me to cut the section I need and crimp it to the section that got snapped.

If you guys know anyone that has the part I'm looking for I'll also be willing to buy it from them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

idk, you could try it. But if you cant find one, go to a junk yard and pull one out of a 99-2004.

You will probably need to pull one from a junked mustang. And FYI it must be from a 1999 or 2000 the 01-04 cable is different.

Yeah if Ford says they don't have it, which is shocking to me, get a junked one, they only made hundreds of thousands of Stangs in 99 and 2000. I would imagine GT being the same as well but not 100%...

Never seen the gas pedal mod snap a cable, why you're supposed to use nylon spacers, the zip ties never contact the actual cable. Looks like whoever did it to yours used some ghetto left over piece of rubber? Shitty...but I wouldn't try to crimp pieces of a cable together, that's just asking for it to break again.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll try the local junk yards for a 99-2000 throttle cable. I'll let you guys know if it works.

Are you saying that you need this cable? It's fairly expensive from Ford, but they do have it, I promise. Call a different Ford dealership, the parts guy you talked to was stupid.

for whoever tried to fix the slack on ur throttle.. make sure there is slack in the first place... get somone to push the pedal all the way to the floor then see if u can turn the throttle on the TB any further.. if it wont go any further with the pedal to the floor then there isnt slack.. or use a small spring to fix the pedal lift slack that way if u slam ur foot to the floor it wont snap the cable again, the spring will compress and keep that from happening.. i've done it on my stang and it works nicely..

and like the others said.. find a junk 99-00 v6 and get the cable off of it.. dont get 01+ unless u have a windstar kit

I figured Ford would have it, they have everything for these cars ...

The "slack" that people remove is at the pedal assembly, its on every Mustang these years. You can push the accelerator pedal for about an inch without engaging the cable, which means lagged response. Spacers can be added to the pedal end of the cable to remove this.

Mustangworld.com - The cool website for Ford Mustang enthusiasts <They have the "gas pedal mod" how-to.

Thats exactly the cable I need; however, I tried calling every dealer in the NY tri state area and each and everyone of them told me that this part was discontinued and that there was no way I can get it.

Thanks for the picture. Its a good source of reference.

By the way, if you dont mind me asking, how are you certain that Ford has this part?

Yes, but if you do it right, by following the instructions, I have never heard anyone else break a cable, and the way his was set-up was not the way the write-up describes.

You probably don't care about the slack mod, but if you want to do it right, I have an extra nylon spacer that is cut and a c-clamp. If you give my your address via PM, I'll mail it to you.

I went to a dealer near me to get an 01-04 Throttle cable and almost walked out the door with a 99-00.
