black smoke
I went to start my car the other day and when I did the engine sputtered and then died with black smoke coming out of the exhuast pipe and engine, the day before I was driving home and had a half tank of gas when I look and gas gauge it read below empty and fuel light was on, it scared me and got in the turn lane and when I applied my brakes the gauge popped back up and fuel light went off. Could it be from my fuel injection being plugged?????? Please help

Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Another term for excess fuel is "running rich." Black smoke out the tailpipe is the least cause for alarm. Excess fuel will usually effect engine performance, reduce fuel economy, and produce a fuel odor.
How did the fuel get into the cylinder in the first place? Some of the causes of excess fuel are a carburetor that is out of adjustment, a faulty fuel pump, a leaky fuel injector, or a faulty engine computer or computer sensor. If black smoke is present, check the engine oil to make sure excess fuel has not contaminated it. Do not start the engine if a heavy, raw fuel smell can be detected in the engine oil, Call your mechanic. |

Any problem happen prior to this? The gauge sounds like a bad sending unit. It dying could be a vacuum leak. Black smoke is running rich. Do you fill the tank up even after the gas pump clicks off? How long has it had black smoke? Running rich can foul the plugs, and they could be causing poor combustion making run even more rich.

Take it to firestone. Get an inspection. Could be something like a sensor sending bad info.

the fuel gauge would be a completly unrelated problem. as long as there was enough gas in it for it to run, it was ok. And as far as the black smoke, yes it is excess fuel. If there are really no driveablity problems, then keep driving it unless it starts acting funny often. I'm used to something funny going on, it happens somewhat often once you modify a car.
Just start it and see if it runs ok. |

strange your not throwing a code with the gauge doing that. sometimes that would happen if maybe there was be damaged fuse in the distribution box, check that out.
a bad injector usually increases effect over time so that fact that you started the car and it was just all 0of a sudden running rich would most likely be the 02 sensor gone bad, or something with your cars computer, possibly could be caused by a blown fuse in the distribution box that messed something up. your going to need to take your car to someone who does know what there doing and can see exactly whats going on because no-one here can tell you the exact problem unless were there with you checking out your car.
