Need advice for exhaust, heater core

Hi again, everybody. It's been a while, but I'm back to get more knowledge out of ya!

Moving on...

The exhaust in my '99 V6 Standard is leaking on the left side, and my driver's side catalytic converter has a loose O2 sensor that's been rattling around for a while now. The leak sounds to be getting worse, as my beautiful Stang is starting to sound like a high-powered lawnmower. Ugh, I even had to refrain from roaring back at some loser in an Eclipse yesterday! The horror!

My question is: Should I just go all out and get a Steeda dual exhaust (that's what I picked at AM.com, and that's the one I'd want if I were to get a whole new exhaust) and some ceramic shorty headers (also @ AM.com)? The Steeda dual system is $600, which also happens to be the price of the stock Y-pipe that I'd have to buy to replace my cat (without cutting out the old and welding in a new one, after also purchasing 2 new O2 sensors, which is what I was told I'd have to do). I don't even know if all that is true!

Basically, I don 't want to spend a butt-load of money on stock crap if I can get a similar deal on an awesome new exhaust.

Also, my heater core busted a long time ago, and winter will be here sooner than I can say "I'm broke and I'm not a mechanic." I have a buddy who says he can do it for $200 if I buy the parts, which is $400 less than what the local dealership quoted me. I know there are a few threads around for that stuff, but does anybody know of a good place to get a detailed, step=by-step, illustrated guide to doing that? I'd just feel better if my friend had that to go by, in case he's a little rusty (he hasn't had a car in years, and he has never worked at a shop).

Thanks for any help in advance.

P.S. I raced that Eclipse, and the bugger kept up with me. It was a stalemate. That bugs me.

Go to a local shop and have them fabricate an exhaust system for you it will be cheaper plus these "kits" dont always fit right. The shop will charge allot for a mid pipe so i would by a mac o/r H pipe and tell them to weld it on i payed 480 for the works.

Hmmm... There aren't too many good shops around here (I live in the mountains, near the Canadian border). I will look around, though. If worse comes to worse, I can just drive it a ways to the nearest city, I suppose.

dont get shortys, they dont do anything, get longtubes if anything, and id just get a shop to fab u up one, you dont need the rear o2 sensors if you dont mind the CEL being on. once you get a tuner in the future (if you are planning to) you can use that to turn off the CEL.

^^ what they said... Kits are unnecessary and cost waaay too much. Have an exhaust shop fab up what you want...long tubes, o/r H, flowmaster 40's, 2.5" pipe will sound nice... I have never heard of an 02 sensor becoming loose and rattling. Have the exhaust shop look at it when they fix you up with a new system.

But I differ from "Ahoboscheese", I think if you want a midpipe to get rid of the cats. Then just have the shop do that as well. I paid the shop $150 for my midpipe which is cheaper than buying one off the internet. I have heard of some people paying even less.

Uh, if I'm not mistaken, LT's don't allow for catalytic converters, and NH law requires that cars have all of their emission control equipment that came stock, as you can see here:

Section 266:59-b Emission Control Equipment.

That includes cats. So... so much for long tubes, I guess. Beyond that stupid law, though, the only other requirement is that there be a "muffler" of some sort, which is defined in a kind of funny way here:

Section 259:66 Muffler.

Perhaps I could have someone fab up a "muffler" that just barely fits that definition! lol

This law sucks, too...

Section 266:59 Muffler; Prevention of Noise.

Almost every state has a law requiring Cats, but unless you have inspections they will never know.

NH, unfortunately, has inspections. I'm thinking about using my parents' address in Florida as my "residence," so I can tint my windows and do all kinds of other fun things. Does that work, or would the local cops (I live in a small town) probably catch on to that and fine me for violating this law:

Section 261:45 Resident of State.

I wonder...

Riiiiight... There's always the "lick-and-stick" places, who will just check to make sure your lights and horn are working. I'm pretty sure I know a few of them...

heres my law here in the great state of NY.... (lol not)

Subsection 31. Mufflers and exhaust systems. Prevention of noise.

Every motor vehicle, operated or driven upon the highways of the state, shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler and exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise and no such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cut-out, bypass, or similar device.

No person shall modify the muffler or exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor or exhaust system of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler or exhaust system originally installed on the vehicle and such original muffler and exhaust system shall comply with all the requirements of this section.

A muffler is a device consisting of a series of chambers or baffle plates, or other mechanical design for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, and effective in reducing noise.

An exhaust system is a series of mechanical devices for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and expelling it into the atmosphere.

Do they measure the actual cO2 output and such on your exhausts or is it visual? If it's visual just punch out the middle of your cats and run a straight pipe through

Just make sure you have a mid pipe (H,X,Y) on it will sound like a ricer.
