Shop replaced my front brakes and now it stops worse than before...help

I got my front pads and rotors replaced..wagner thermo quiet pads and mid grade rotors, im not sure of the name, they are the smooth kind.
So after its done, I drive the car and it feels worse than before, I almost rear ended a couple of people. It feels like the pedal is spungy

The shop says because there is a coating on the pads and rotors and in a few days it will wear off and ill be able to stop better.

is this true? what should i do? i have no stopping power

Drive it a couple of days and just take it easy. Some pads feel different than others so your pedal may feel softer than before, you may have to give it a little more muscle than before to stop the same. If not bring it back and tell them you want better pads.

Could be a coating... did the shop bed the pads in or did they tell you to? If the answer is "neither", that could be the issue.

Spongy pedal can also be due to air in the lines. Do you know if they bled the brakes when they were done? It should've been part of the brake job, but maybe they figured they could get away with not doing it.

+1 to both. Brake fluid/air in the lines was the first thing I thought of when you mentioned the pedal feels spongy.

Sounds like they didn't use brake cleaner to remove the oil on the rotors which got the oil into your pads and will probably take a month to wear the pads enough to get rid of it. My suggestion is to go out and heat the brakes up.

I have a thought bout tht, but id ask johnson or the other guys in the forum first....if ur one side is worn more than the othere id say a semi seized calipar (idk how to spell it) or a calipar. Tht the pin and boot is not floating not allowing the calipar to back off....but again id check with they guys who posted in this topic...

if you are unhappy and dont feel safe return to shop and let them drive it. brakes are nothing to guess about. tell them it is so bad that you are scared to drive it. that should get the attention of any reputable shop.

if the brakes that came off were low and the right side were decent, id look into replacing that left caliper, chances are it is hanging up and will ruin your new brakes as well.

The mechanic said that they didnt have to bleed the brakes bc there would be no air getting into the lines when they changed the brakes...

Should I take it somewhere else today and get them bled? Now I dont know which side was bad, I dont want to wear the pads uneven, Will they know which one is bad and am I going to have to replace the pads again If I need calipers?

I say give it a few 60-0 stops somewhere safe lol. When I got my rotors turned and new pads on, the braking felt slick as hell. You could hear them just sliding. By the end of the day after playing with them and stopping nice and hard a few time it cleared up.

Shouldnt take much to get them worn in and working right.

Yes find another mechanic. at minimum he should be concerned. how does he know there wasent a little air in system before he even got the job. a good mechanic would at least test drive after brake job.

If only replacing pads and rotors, calipers wouldn't need to be removed, so no bleeding would be necessary.

Is this still an issue? Any coating would have worn off by now if you've been driving the car.
