Modding my mustang.

So I was talking with a friend of mine who owns a Camaro. I told him that for my first modifications, I would want to buy a some 4.10 or whatever gears, and a t-lok. As soon as I said that, he said "4.10?! Are you crazy? Good luck getting 5 MPG, and those gears wouldn't go well with your auto."

Well, now what he said has got me thinking, and who better to answer my questions than a community of mustang owners?

As it stands, if you guys convince me to mod my car, I'll keep it until it won't run anymore. If I don't mod it, then I'll probably end up selling it a few years after college and buying a new GT.

Would the set of 4.10 gears really cut down drastically on my MPG, and would they work with an automatic as well as a manual? And is my car, which is a 2000 V6 Automatic with 68,000 miles on it worth spending any money on modding it?

Thanks guys.

Do me a favor walk up to your friend take a big stick and just hit him in the head with it.

You may lose like 2-3mpg tops, and 4.10's are actually best for an auto since the computer can shift so much more efficient than a human you can handle the short first without getting out of your powerband to far.

I still want gears...they will work fine...also I believe you lose mileage with every mod you do because they come with temporary leadfootitis

He just doesnt want you to beat him haha. 4.10s on your car will be perfect, you'll lose a couple mpg but not too much and your top speed won't be as high but who cares you'll never need to go that fast anyways.

Okay, so gears and a t-lok (GF) would be good. Do you guys think modding my car, with its mileage, would be worth it, though?

lol not all mods decrease mpg, look at exhaust. just by simply adding a dual exhaust you get gas mileage.

Okay, cool. Thanks for the input guys.

Just curious, what do you think I should do after the gears and t-lok? Exhaust?

Exhaust and CAI, will run about 415 for both installed for about 12-18 hp

UD pulleys- about 160 for 8-10 hp

tuner with 3 tunes -about 400 for 13-20 hp

so just go with what is good for you I would personally get exhaust and a CAI.

I am looking to install new gears on my 2002 automatic V6. I'm not sure what to go with, 3.73 or 4.10. Which would be ideal? Does anyone know how much a shop would charge for the install?
