O/D Race.
So earlier in the day. i raced a 98 v6 mustang with my v6 3.8 97 mustang only mod i had is flowmasters straight pipes 40 series. he also only had flowmasters x pipes though 40 series. After we raced i walk up to his driver window and i see he had his O/D off. he screeched his tires and i didnt so i won. just wondering isnt the O/D supposed to be for heavy duty pulling? or does it help that its off when racing? i also know it just gives the car more gas. and a better sound to the flows when cruisin in the street. Any details? Thanx alot.

Overdrive off will suck the gas out of your tank so fast your head will spin.

Overdrive is nothing but a higher gear ratio.

it locks out 4th(overdrive). You use it in a race. You dont want to go WOT in 4th.

you lose torque, with o/d. Its used to maintain speed with less power.

Yea you can get away with turning it off for a 1/4 mile pass at the track, just don't keep it off and go like 70ish? You will build up a bunch of unnecessary heat which leads to part failure, sometimes pretty quick.
To simply put it: 1st-3rd gear race, o/d off late 3rd-4th, keep it on and spare your car lol.

So say like Demone said 1-3 gear o/d off would it be bad to turn it on at that high speed to get into 4th and 5th?

You're going to be better off using it or not. 85mph-95mph for 3 or 4 mins isn't going to burn anything up. Just don't get into a habit of not using it. Capiche?

Whether or not you use it is solely up to you. It will not make you slower/faster or make you overheat/not overheat.

ohhhhh dear .....
OD is your 4th gear. You turn it off and your car goes into 3rd gear. @70mph turning off O/D will bump you up 500-1000rpm (I think its closer to 500 but i cant remember). If you turn it off, it keeps you from going into 4th gear. If your cruising in a stick, you wouldnt do it in 4th, you would go 5th. So dont turn it off to cruise. If your racing, it may or may not help. Just depends on how fast your going. 1/4 mmm might not hurt to turn off, but chances are you wont hit a high enough speed/rpm for it to shift into O/D. Anything further yeah you should leave it off just a lil to gain a very very small advantage. But like any tranny, you have to shift at some point, so keep an eye on your rpm and turn the O/D back on.... Simple. |

Unless turning it off controls something else that I dont know, Then yes its in your head.
To my knowledge O/D is only a 4th gear, used for high speeds. |

Didnt think it did anything else lol
I learned all this by driving w and w/o it lol who needs a forum :p Like I said, turning it off will keep you in 3rd a lil longer for those higher rpms, but you wouldnt leave it in 1st and race, so remember to turn it back on before you blow your engine, or just leave it alone
