Clutch Needs to be Replaced?

I just got a loud screeching sound from my clutch. The sound was only minor before, but yesterday while driving for a few hours in city traffic, I felt the pressure in the clutch change a bit and then the loud screeching and grinding happened.

I have yet start the car back up today, but I will be taking it into the shop since something is clearly wrong but, would this be the clutch or transmission?

I have an 2000 V6 Mustang 5spd.

Sounds like the TOB went out.

+1 exactly what mine did when it finally failed. When you get a new one, get a Ford OEM TOB as they are build better than aftermarket.

If you are having any issues with the clutch, I would just go ahead and change the clutch to. Maybe upgrade to a better one and an adjuster kit?

This somewhat sounds like good news since it's not the clutch or transmission. Or is the TOB just as expensive?

I was thinknig that one day my clutch would go bad and that I would replace it with one that helps performance but then again, it's only a V6, should I even bother with a performance clutch?

It cost me 130 to get mine replaced. But it was not OEM, so it rattles some times.

You can get ones that are made for stock, and are made to simply perform better than stock. Engage quicker and smoother, last longer, and just feel much better.

But it is possible to have too much clutch.

SPEC Stage 1 Clutch (94-04 Mustang V6) at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!
RAM HDX Clutch (94-04 V6) at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!

Any recommendation for better clutch for a slightly modded mustang?

The ram is rated for 450, and it is the same price as the SPEC which is rated for less.

I have the SPEC Stage I and like it alot. A clutch is one part that def. works as well as the install is. People like to down on SPEC but I've had no issues whatsoever besides the TOB, but that has stopped making noise for some time now. Huge improvement over stock in shift times and smoothness...of course that's over a stock clutch that was on its way out.

I second getting the clutch adjuster kit as well, I love everypiece of it. Also, do get the OEM TOB.

I think I saw it was mentioned that you can have too much clutch. I wouldn't go get a clutch rated for some high torque and hp numbers if you are only slightly modded. The Stage I is good for a six with anything less than FI or internal modifications.

107k on the stock clutch? It's probably time for a replacement. My stock clutch has 20% left at 100k miles. Ford OEM TOB is a $50. If you can replace it yourself, awesome. If not, definitely replace the whole clutch because it's probably nearing the end of its life and you'd end up paying twice for the same install. Cost me $290 to get my clutch replace and the flywheel resurfaced plus the cost of the clutch. Honestly, if you have room to drop the transmission yourself, it looks like a pretty simple install. I just didn't have shit for space or tools when I needed mine replaced.

For a first time install ... it isn't a fast paced deal. I was taking it slow and taking pics and keeping notes along the way, but it lasted over I believe 3 days... couldn't tell you the total hours but don't go tearing into it thinking you'll be at the club that same night.

That being said it isn't difficult, depending on your skill level and knowledge, just more to it than take this out and put this in.

Note: I had to do a lot of work on the crank because of minor scratching. Had to put a repair sleeve on that I didn't have at first and yadda yadda yadda. Things like that are great to know before you dive into a project. Other things besides just the clutch components should be replaced while you're in there.

+1, while you're in there, replace the pilot bearing too.
