T-lok and 4.10's
I have done some searching on here but couldnt find a real answer to my question. But approximately how much does it cost to get a t-lok and 4.10's in a 7.5 rear end if i have a shop do it? I know a shop is going to charge me more than if i would get my own parts from AM but can you guys give me some insight in to how much i need to save up to get my gears and t-lok put in.

Is that installation and parts or just the install?

yeah usually is the better way to go.
8.8 will be stronger, and will have a tlok already in it. Maybe a little harder to find one with 4.10 gears though. So if you get one and buy gears for it, you need the Motive bearing kit, and it wouldnt hurt to get the disk pack to rebuild the tlok. Only thing is the 8.8 is heavier ... but you have many more options for parts w/ 8.8. Check craigslist.com I see them all the time on there |

Heavier is actually what i am looking for in the rear end. I live in ohio and winter is coming so i know not having use of both back wheels is gonna hurt on the snow and ice. Hopefully i can get something done before the bulk of the snow hits.
Thanks for the input guys.

How much more does a 8.8 weigh? Can't be too much?
And also IMO you should keep the 400 and built a compressor tank and an air impact gun.. Then you can install yourself with no problems

You can be out the door for ~$600. I have a 7.5 rear with new axle seals, t-lok, motive 3.73s, and bearing professionally installed. I'm considering selling it to get an 8.8 or swap out the t-lok for a tru-trac to handle more power.

the whole 8.8 being stronger is bogus. Well unless you do something to the 8.8. They have the same axles, and same tlok basically. Just a little bigger. The tlok is the weak point, the clutches burn up.
If you want a strong rearend then you are going to want a detroit unit or a spool those are your two options. Sure it is easier to just swap in a 8.8 and it will have a tlok that will handle what most ppl throw at it, but you still have to install the 3.73s which will cost just as much as installing the tlok and stuff. Just my 2 cents. And yes you can do the tlok and gears at home. The biggest pain is getting all the measurements otherwise they will make noise. You will need time and a good dial indicator and magnetic base to get it done correctly.

^ agreed. You can install gears and a tlok yourself, but good luck getting it to not whine.

True^^ can be hard to find a great deal but if he buys one he wont have to pay labor either. Saving a good 300-400 bucks

You are lucky though you already have an 8.8 in the 11' mustang with a tlok.
And I guess if you can find an 8.8 with gears it is a great deal. I just had searched for a year or so and no luck so decided to go with the 7.5. And you can find tru tracs for like 340 i believe. Oh and BTW I did my gears myself. The first time I did it I had gear whine due to having my dial indicator setup poorly. I drove it for a week and took it apart and redid the whole thing and now I have no gear whine. I also have access to all the tools I would ever need AKA my 15,000 worth of snap on tools sitting at my college.

It is actually kind of difficult and scary the first time. But honestly if you have a dial indicator and a hoist along with a good 1/2 inch impact then it is simple. But doing it at home is pretty difficult. If I were to do it over again I would have waited till I could do it in school and use a hoist.
