Springs..
So, I'm curious what your guys' opinions are on cutting the springs to lower your car, compared to just buying new springs that will lower it 1.5"-2" or so. From what I understand, if you do it yourself, cutting the springs is free. But I just dont understand why alot of people wouldnt go that route instead of buying new springs if there wasn't a disadvantage. So whats the pros and cons of cutting stock springs?
THANKS, Jake. |

I wouldn't do it. Many times your ride quality suffers. Pick up a set of used lowering springs.

Thanks for your response, I'll probably wait till spring before I get new springs and I'll probably just buy new ones instead of cutting the stock ones.

Plenty of people cut springs and are fine with the ride quality. 6er_w/vengeance has done it a couple times. As long as you keep it to about a coil you'll be fine.

If you're going to cut the springs, it's suggested you change the shock / struts also. You should change the stuts / shocks anyway if they are due, but if your low on money. I personally would cut the springs and install a set of autozone cheap replacement shocks and struts built for a Fox body (93 model). The fox body has shorter shocks by 1".
You can pick up front struts for $38 a piece and rears for $25 a piece.. are they high quality, HELL no. but they are probably in better shape than the shocks you have on their now if they are past 50k miles. I am doing this tomorrow myself tomorrow. I'm being cheap b/c Christmas is coming and i would rather my kids get nice stuff than my car priorities. On an experimental side, I have installed Steeda X2 ball joints (extended length helps with lowered vehicles). I will install the shorter shocks / struts and cut the springs. This will put the car sitting where it would with a good set of springs, shocks and struts and I will be able to get an alignment to see if caster / camber plates are needed. If they can't fully adjust my alignment due to the need for caster / camber plates, i'll know i need to add that to the list. |

IMO, a car is too big of an investment to half ass a mod on it. I'd just save the money and do it right with good quality parts. Just my opinion though.

Cut 1.5 cools off each spring and it will drop it quite a bit.

Wow. Looking at it, I think I like original best. And that was .5 off the front only.

I agree 100% I'm eventually get some lowing springs that keep it about the same drop as the cuts.

These cars def. look correct lowered about 1.5" from stock. I'm one to suggest buying aftermarket progressive rate springs to lower them. Cutting them can be done, but to me its too easy to come out incorrect in some fashion, and for a DD you won't like poor ride quality much.
To a further extent, the ride quality will suffer with stiffer springs as well, it takes more than just springs to make a lowered application look and behave like it was a stock setting. x2 balljoints, bumpsteer kit, c/c plates, new shocks/struts...they all help make it behave naturally. Either way you decide, get it lowered and take pics!

I have 4 bolt CC plates, bumpsteer, solid rack bushings, and I am about to get X2s, and lower shocks and struts when it comes time to replace them. I might hold out on springs 'til then, and put it all into one mod and spend a little more to get coilovers all around since I and getting shocks, struts and springs. I have the equipment for it.

Cutting springs are fine if done correct. Won't suffer much ride quality and even if you did... It will look a lot nicer!
