Question

I can't decide...

Hey guys, I cant decide. I'm lookin for advice from all those who wish to share their wisdom

Here is the situation, I have a 98 v6, just got it about 4 months ago. First mustang, and im hooked. I love it. The only thing I dont love is that there isnt as much power as id like. So what I was planning on doing was getting a 99 8.8 rear, 3.73s and a tuner. I think the t lok and the gears with faster accel would be alright for now, but i really want a gt. Only problem is that i got a speeding ticket with my old 3.0 taurus and im screwed on insurance.

So my question to you guys is, is it worth putting a good amount of money into this car if I turn around and buy a gt in a few years, and do these same mods over again? I cant decide if i should put money into my 6er now, knowing in a few years i wont have it.

I know this car could be fast, but i dont really wanna do an engine swap, turbo, or anything major. The very most that i would do is run nitrous. I havent decided, but that is why i want the 8.8, just incase.

I a just lookin for advice from someone whos maybe been in the situation or really just anyone who wants to comment.
Thanks guys!

buy a fox body...it'll be cheap on insurance...and be a v8...plus a stock 5.0 will still out run your stock single port 3.8...but with that v8 rumble

stock 5.0s are nothing, but then again neither are 2v GTs and hardly 3v. And IMO most foxes you find are going to be beat up/ugly that are going to be in the price range he wants now.

Now that I'm in a position where I could buy pretty much any car under $20k, I have some insight on this. For a while I wanted a GT, a Corvette, etc. I still kind of want to get a GT for a DD and leave it stock. But I stuck with the 6er and kept doing stuff to it. It's fun, and I think I'm not behind where I would have been in selling it and buying a GT/C5 Corvette and modding it. Granted a Corvette is a completely different car, it still would have been significantly slower than my 6er until I got into the engine and did heads and a cam, then it would be about the same, maybe a couple tenths quicker. But then I'm out a lot more money from the start to have a good Corvette to start on. Same thing with a GT, except I know I wouldn't be in a good situation at all (where with the Corvette I would trust it's engine at 400whp) because once you're ove probably 350 rwhp you're starting to get where you're risking breaking stuff. And that's the same place I am now with my 6er except I'm not really out anything if I blow an engine because they are so cheap. And either way the real solution would be forged internals.
And I have something very few others have.

I'm not saying GTs aren't nice either. I wouldn't mind having one to build too.

But to your question...if you are really going to sell it, then no I wouldn't do a thing to it if you're not going FI, especially a singleport. So just save and buy another. If insurance is a real issue, you could always do an engine swap in something. Which I'm sure is illegal in the end, but it is a way around things. If you talk to some people, you may be able to get a turbo done for a little over 2k with you doing some work if you're interested. It'll never end there though, trust me....

How much more is insurance on a GT for you?

When I called asking about the price difference between a V6 and GT it was like $10 every 6 months.

Yeah, and if he's seton an a certain body style, he can just get the oldest year of that style to keep the price down. Assuming it is in shape equal to comparable others. It can be significant though once you get a ticket. It would only be $60 more for me for a 2002 Corvette over my 1999 V6, so much less than that.

Well, I guess i never checked for sure. This car is between 250 and 300 a month for full coverage, so i assumed it would be murder for full coverage, but if all goes well i get off sr-22 in february. And im makin car payments. I'm just a poor highschool student lol, but i want to have this figured out before early next year so i know whether or not to do modding before college.

I guess this car wouldnt be bad to learn on. I used to know absolutely nothin bout cars, couldnt even change the oil, but i guess I just really want to learn and do as many mods as i can myself. Its something that im starting to get interested in, but if i am going to mod a car I wanna have it for a while, and like my car is 12 years old, I just dont know how long i can expect it to run. I am the 2nd owner and the other owner was an adult so i trust that it was constantly rodded around so i guess who knows. But it has some suspension squeks and creeks, but i suppose it could be a really nice car if i stuck with it long enough.

My advice would be not to do much because a lot, seriously, a lot of people won't buy your car simply because of the mods. Granted you have those who will, if it comes down to just selling it period those mods can hurt you sales wise.

I know because a few friends of mine sell cars and they say most people want them barebone stock. Although you will still no doubt sell it, I'm just giving you some heads up because I don't know your situation.

And another thing: mods don't increase price value of cars. You can up the price but it'll cut your potential buyers. Again this is car salesman knowledge I've heard... A LOT.

All of this I say based on you knowing you're not keeping it long.

Yeah you should be fine on mileage...and based on what these cars are "worth" $ wise, you're not going to lose anything by modding them lol. They're cheap as hell, especiallt the 94-97s. I mean not saying there's anything wrong with that, even mines only "worth" $5k. But it's in great shape and I could sell it for more.

And you can always take mods off and people won't ever know it was modded. Then you don't just lose all your money.

Yeah, and there are some mods that are good for like my car and the newer body style so some things i could take of and reuse. And one thing i know, if i get an 8.8 rear i would not have any problem selling it in my area, especially if i put the original rear back on my car when/if i sell.

Thats why I stuck with my v6.
this is my first car as well and instead of going out and buying a faster car to mod, I figured I'd learn on this car first.

how about a 94-95 gt since you dont like the fox style, itll still be cheap on insurance because its older.

imo a 5.0 would be a great motor to learn on. they don't have that much power stock so you wont be too overwhelmed at first. and mods are cheap and you could find a ton on craigslist.

again it be a great and fun learning experience imo

I am starting to get the speed bug too....... I am going to get rid off it though before I ruin my record. Right now the most over the limit I go is 15 but only if the other people on the highway "peer pressure" me into it. they go 75-78 so I am forced to do the same, I haven't gotten a ticket yet but I got caught by my dad last night.

this right here...i've gotten to tear down a few 5.0s and i learned alot from it...its a very nice engine that excepts mods better then any of our mod motors...looking at 5.0 mag on their dyno runs i was surprised to see an average fox gaining 20+ hp with a good exhaust and a clean airfilter...i mean find me a mod motor that will do that without a tune...hell even with a tune

@9986...what mods do you have on the car right now?

Right now I don't have all that much. I only have ported lower, gasket matched heads, and the windstar is on for now, but I'm going to port a stocker and run it because I'll make more power than the block can handle anyway. I still have 918 valve springs on it from the cam I had.

I had a 212/218 .545 lift 110 LSA cam but that's gone. I couldnt get it running ight with that cam for 6 months and that almost pushed me to get rid of it. But I didn't and now it runs fine with the stock cam. So I have a twin turbo kit sitting on it minus the turbos until my precision 5557s arrive next week.

And of course the basic stuff I have like exhaust, gears,...I might just swap out the t-lok for a detroit locker.
