Is it in PA? Im usually back n forth from allentown at times. I wouldn't mind checking out a shop around there.

If in doubt go find a pick n pull that has a v6 mustang and practice taking things apart and putting things back on, then if you fuck up just leave . Then you might feel more confident working on your own car.
LOL I kinda wish I did have a spare hoopty around to practice vinyls on lol even though vinyls are effin expensive >_>

I think exhaust is another thing most of us go to a shop for. I bet if more of us could weld, a lot more of us would do it ourselves (because I wouldn't buy a 100% bolt on exhaust kit). Speaking of which, I need to get my buddy to teach me how to weld.

My mechanic is typing this sentence right now. I do however have an old family friend by the name of Uncle Frank that runs a shop in Wharton, and runs pro drag cars on the weekend. I used to have him fix most everything, now I only hit him up for advice on how to fix what I broke.

For trans/axle work I go to Whitty Transmission in West Milford. the only trans thing I ever did myself was swap the pans on my '03 F150. Took off the steel one and put in a TCI deep aluminum one.

Exhaust is done by me in the driveway. Heavier exhaust work used to be handled by a local Meineke until they charged my brother $500 to put a muffler on his Firebird. After that I bought a 150 MIG welder at a swap meet in Englishtown.

Plus buying a good welder isnt worth it considering its a onetime deal.

I started out with just as much experience as you op. Most of us did. Our engines aren't hard to work on. Get yourself a wrench set, look up how to's, and go to work. You start to realize that and engine is mostly loosening and tightening bolts. I started with a cai, built a lil confidence to put on long tubes, felt really good and put on the windtsar, felt amazing and did the cam install. Now I feel invencible. If you do need a shop to do some work, look up a local mustang club and ask them who they would recommend.

NYC isn't too far from me. Hop on 80, then 46, to 3 into the Lincoln Tunnel or go through Jersey City to the Holland. but I know the area around the Lincoln better so that's the one I use. Bout an hour and a half.

Ditto to this. Every year that passes has me further and further into my engine. Then with side projects I'm building a vintage 302 block for some car body I'll find eventually:

I'm quoting this from another site I posted on explaining to another member about the internal basics of most motors.

Same photo. Green is the oil pick-up. Red are the main bearing caps (2 bolt mains), Yellow is the bottom of the piston connecting rods. There are two per "bank". If you look at a "V" motor you'll see the bores don't line up across from each other; this is why. Blue "X's" are what visible parts of the crankshaft. Pink are the freeze plugs and the blue circle is where the oil filter used to be.

Better shot of the bottom

Green are the caps red is the piston rods

Pistons, bearings, main caps, connecting rods

Crankshaft

Red is where the main caps hold the crankshaft down in the bearings, green is the locale for the connecting rod journal bearings.

Camshaft. "Pushrod" motors have one of these on the bottom, SOHC motors have one of these at the top of each cylinder head. DOHC motors have two per head. For example a DOHC Honda VTEC Inline 4Cyl has two of these in the cylinder head whereas your mom's truck has 2 total - one per side. The Cobra has a total of four - 2 per side.

Timing crap.

Fully stripped block.

On even fire V6 engine (like ours) there are not 4 crank throw holding 2 rods. There are 6 crank throws holding 1 rod. Really the only main different between newer V6 and V8 cranks. Also, the V6 crank throw are offset from each other to make it fire smoothly. That makes the V6 crank weaker than the V8 crank.

Give it a shot it's really not hard at all... just intimidating at first since the measurements are so vital.

Tip... have 2 sets of bearings 1 set for mock up and one set for the final setup. On the mock up set you grind the inside just enough so that they slip onto their respective locations rather than being pressed on. That makes life easier for the disassembly-reassembly process of getting everything perfect... and multiple crush sleeves just in case.
