How did you find YOUR Mechanic?
I know alot of people on here are familiar with their engines enough to bolt on their mods themselves. Some of us (probably most) aren't confident or talented enough to do such mods. How did you go about finding your mechanic to install your major mods? Gears, headers, axles, etc etc.
I am almost able to buy my first few mods and I need a mechanic. I live in brooklyn, ny and I don't know (or trust) anyone in this damn borough with my Silvy >_> but I trust you guys/girls ^_^ lol Anyone can recommend a good mechanic to install my future mods in the NYC area? Or any guidance to find one myself. |

I don't go to mechanics often, but when I do I usually take recommendations from other people who have had work done. I'll pay a little more to make sure my shit is installed right rather than letting just anybody have a go at it.

Gears is the only thing I don't trust myself with... Headers - easy axles - simple

I found this topic - http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums...uto-shops.html and in it they referred CJs as a good place.
Question - when I take the car in to install an 8.8 rear how long would that take? Do they usually hold the car over night? Cuz my problem is I live in ny lol i dont mind driving to nj to install a mod but how the hell am i getting back home LOL and back to get there to get the car when its done lol. |

I do everything myself
for stuff I can't do myself, like exhaust work, I go to a guy that owns a mustang performance shop that a friend recommended me. Its a 45 minute drive but he does good work and is cheap. |

For the stuff I don't plan to do myself, I asked mechanics or auto shop guys who they'd recommend.
For example, I went to a Mustang and Corvette Performance shop (Brad's Custom Auto's) in my area that had made a name for themselves to do the welding for my subframe connectors. I asked them who I should go to for replacing tires, they said buy online and go to them for the install. I ignored them and just asked my Grandpa who's a babyboomer do-it yourself mechanic who said he's been having his tires replaced at some other local shop that had made a name for themselves. So I went, had a good experience and asked where they'd recommend for exhaust. In short, research and find one good place, and you can probably start along a chain of good shops. Also, local shops generally tend to be better than franchises. Also, almost anywhere you go, ask around and you'll likely find a mustang guy (or gal). |

Remember, just because you walked into the shop and took time out of their day, it doesn't mean you have to pay them to do they work. Be picky.

If I still lived in a house that had a garage then I would be doing the work myself too.

I go online, find a write up or installation guide and go to work. As everyone else said gears are really the only thing other than body work or paint that I wont attempt.
If in doubt go find a pick n pull that has a v6 mustang and practice taking things apart and putting things back on, then if you fuck up just leave . Then you might feel more confident working on your own car.
