Braking problem in the snow..

We had a decent amount of snow on the ground last night and it was my first time driving my mustang when the roads were slippery. Let me start this off by saying its almost impossible to drive in the snow. Secondly, when i tried braking and the car would slide a little, the brake pedal would like stick and vibrate really hard, and you couldnt press it anymore, it was almost like the brake pedal was trying to release but my foot was holding it back, it happened at a few stop signs and i was trying to see what the problem was, its weird. Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be?

Do you have anti-lock brakes?

Snow stuck in your wheels? You would probably have better luck without ABS honestly.

Yeah that's why I asked lol. There should be an ABS light that will turn on when you start your car indicating that the system is working.

If you do, what you described is exactly what anti-lock brakes are. What they do is instead of just braking they will automatically pump the brakes for you when you push it to the floor. This is done because without the system, you would have to manually pump the brakes instead of having them lock up on you and send you in an uncontrollable. The system is a godsend in the winter but a real pain otherwise.

I know I might get blasted for this but, try turning off the traction control (if you can) and just go real slow. When it's time to hit the brakes be real gentle on them. The ABS will respond to the wheels locking when in the snow. There is no where near the resitance in snow as there is on a dry road. Therefore it's much easier for you to "lock" the brakes in the snow.

It's one of those things on the road that suggest you bring the vehicle to a stop. I like to think of them as glorified yield signs. Meaning that I don't ever really stop, but I take a good look at cross traffic before I continue.

Is this "stop sign" something like that yellow light thingy where you have to go as fast as you can before it turns red?

But seriously, I think your ABS may be kicking in if you have it. If it ain't it and u ain't stopping at all... something else's up. Also, If you have not done the "SNOW MOD" than try to get it done ASAP. Sandbags, weights, salt bags, dogfood bag, kitchen sink... whatever to give you rear traction is something to consider. I just put about 200 lbs of weights (and summer rim/tire) in the trunk and I also have ugly winter tires on steelies all around.

yah it's the ABS. the pulsating you are fealing is normal, it's the valves in your ABS controler opening and closing to release the pressure in your brake lines therefore slowing your tires to unlock and regain traction. The grinding or groaning noise you are hearing is the pump kicking in to re-pressurize the system. Once again this is completely normal and when it does hapten you dont want to press the brake pedal harder it won't do anything. Just hold it how it was and let the ABS take over.
