Re-Torque of Head Bolts?


someone had told me that after about a week or two of installing fresh heads and bolts i may have to retorque my head bolts.......is this true? if so why?

head bolts


dont know if its necesary but its not a bad idea to make sure its stable, id just make sure there tight. but yet again i dont that with everythng like my exhaust i check all that stuff every once and awhile

the head bolts are stretch style you torque them then give them an extra quarter turn any more and ur going to snap them. and no u dont need to torque them again.

just wondering cuz i know some things need to be re adjusted after the have been broken in... don't know bout heads tho

i wouldnt bother every head gasket ive done ive never rechecked them or been told to by the mechanic that took me under his wing. now exhaust manifold bolts on the other hand should be tightened up another quarter to half turn after the engine has warmed up completely and this should be done when the exhaust system is still hot so dont burn ur self

and if your bolts wernt torqued to speck after a week of driving you would have another leak BTW

No. You don't retorque them. They are stretch head bolts and can only be torqued once.

Sounds like you have it back together. Congratulations!
