Gah! My clutch pedal started rattling

Over the last couple of weeks, my clutch pedal has starting rattling at low rpms. It sounds like I've got woodpeckers under my dash! If I lightly touch my foot to the pedal, the noise stops immediately and I feel a decent amount of vibration. However, if I press the pedal in an inch or 2, all the vibration in the pedal stops. BTW, I'm driving a 2002 v6 with around 105k miles on it.

Initially, I thought the bushing on the pedal shaft was worn, causing the pedal to move around too much, but when I took it apart, it looked fine. I replaced it anyways, but the noise is still there. Also, The previous owner replaced the clutch about 10k miles ago, so it should still be good. Any of you guys have any ideas what's causing the vibration? Thanks.

I have the same issue on my car, I was told it has to do with the flywheel being loose. Since I plan on replacing the clutch and flywheel next month I have just been dealing with it. What your doing is the best work around "lightly touch my foot to the pedal, the noise stops immediately "

Its not the flywheel I don't think. I had the same problem and it was my clutch cable. It had slack in it especially when I got my new clutch installed. I replaced the cable and sure enought it was it. Hope this helps

Just a little more input... id just buy the clutch adjust kit from AM for a hundred bucks. Might as well and I think its worth the money

^ Its 100% your T.O.B. it happens to almost all cars around 100k miles.

While youre replacing it you might as well do the clutch and resurface your flywheel

not always true. but it is a likely cause. when i installed my new clutch it rattled right away and it was the cable

I'm going to bet this is the most likely cause. My clutch started rattling just before my TOB started chirping.

true. but when it starts rattling after 100k miles of driving, it is more likely the bearing. a new clutch will rattle if it isnt adjusted right

Sounds like a combo of the TOB going kaput, and the pressure plate chattering.

What? Cable clutch home slice no slave cylinders involved. And since OP is high mileage and stock components I say TOB. I would say cable is a possible cause as well, however normally a stock cable on stock set up isn't gonna be the first thing to go. These cars are notorious for shitty TOB's.

If you get a new TOB. ONLY get a ford racing heavy duty TOB. I compared it to the one that came with the clutch, and it weighed almost twice as much, but had no play in it what-so-ever. The ram one looked like it would start to go out by the time I took it for its maiden voyage.

This is the one I got.
FR HD TOB

Make sure you grease it well too.

I just had this problem after installing a brand new clutch. The mechanic told me to change the clutch because it was defective. Went and exchanged it, mechanic put it on and it workds fine now.Btw, Flywheel was resurfaced before both times. Also my car is at the 150k mark..
