Automatic shifter Q's

Alright, im looking at getting an automatic shifter (b&m console hammer) and i was wondering if manually shifting the automatic would hurt it at all. Also has anyone installed one, how hard is it to install? And about shift kits, are they any different than just using a tuner to adjust the shift points because i am getting an xcal 2 and dont wanna buy a shift kit as well if it doesnt help at all.

up shifting is fine. You will need a shift kit if you want to downshift as well. A shift kit and a the x-cal will both help. The shift kit will make everything in the tranny able to take the manual shifting.

Well I dont know about the whole downshifting part, but I do know this, the way an auto shifter works is that it's controlled by some kind on hydrolic pump which allows it to shift gears, what a shift kit does is increase the pressure of the pump which will cause it to shift quicker eliminating the lag between gears. All a tuner will do is allow you to raise your shift point and pedal pressure. If you want a tuner I got one for sale.

yeah the shiftkit also puts better bearing in and that increased pressure the car will understand the down shift where stock it will rev real high then kick down a gear really harshly from the lag

: ) they are built for the floor but that would be rad to have one on the column... yours doesn't come with the consule in the center? you could fab something up and borrow peices from other cars to make something custom that works for you

... their are drive gears... get in your moms mini van and look at the gear indicator it says something like

P
R
N
D
3
2
1

you can manually shift it between those first three gears and drive if you so choose but i think its dumb unless your tranny is built right... plus it has the chance of destroying something

it is kinda... if you are stuck in snow or have a trailer or something then its kinda useful... other wise its just extra abuse your car doesn't need

no it doesn't have a center consol, kinda like a truck, but the real reason you have that ability to shift manually is for if you are going down a steep grade over long periods of time so that you don't wear down or overheat your breaks, now on a little car like a stang it doesnt' really matter but on a truck or something heavyer it does

mmk what the d is is 3rd gear and OD is fourth gear... in a sense... its a lil more complex but thats the easiest/best way to look at it
