Shaking while driving

I have a 1999 Mustang v6 with the 4-speed auto. I noticed for a long time now that when I reach 40 mph, the rpms stay at about 1200 and the car creeps in terms of acceleration, there is also a vibration. This happens until 50 mph and it only happens in 4th gear. The only way I can effectively accelerate is if I push the gas pedal down until the car down shifts into 3rd. This is now a major problem as most of my commuting is at 45mph. I cleaned out my IAC and MAF with throttle body cleaner, no improvement. Any ideas what could be wrong?

From those symptoms, it sounds like torque converter shudder. How many miles are on the car, and when was the transmission fluid/filter changed last? Have you checked the trans fluid level? Is the fluid burnt at all?

I dont recall the exact date, but within a year ago I had the tranny fluid changed. The mechanic said that if the fluid was burnt or something, changing it would do more harm than good, but he said it was ok to change and did that. And the engine has a little less than 120k. I try to make it a habit to check my fluids every month, haven't checked yet for February I'll take a look.

Nope, trans fluid is clean and full. I think my car is just a lemon. A sun-bleached, black, one wheel drive lemon.

Which is why my next car will be a Mazdaspeed 6 or a 04 Mustang Mach 1 (Manual).

My 99 did exactly what your talking about, buy some dr tranny from Oreileys its like 7 bucks add that where your transmission fluid goes and that will fix the shudder in the torque converter temporarily, that stuff really does work wonders!! I went and had my transmission switched out and ever since i did that i havent had a problem, i would advise doing this if you plan on keeping the car, i got my transmission for 100 bucs and paid some jackwagons who messed up and caused mine to leak which was 200 then another 150 to fix their screw up but other people quoted me 150 to do a transmission swap, i know around here ive seen transmissions for 150 - 200 so if you get it done right you could be looking at 300 - 400 for a transmission and a swap, i ended up paying over 500 cause my guys jacked it up and didnt replace my o ring on the dipstick and all my gasgets. hope this helps man

Could it be that you just have a slow V6 and you are in overdrive at 45 mph?
