It works moderately well for checking gaps. The problem is that people tend to use them to open up the gap by prying against the center electrode, which is a no-no. Only use a tool that pulls back on the ground electrode without touching the center electrode.

Depends on what kind you're using. I believe coppers should be changed ~15k-20k miles. Then there are the longer lasting plugs and the mileage varies on those with some claiming they're good for as many as 60k miles. But you're also going to pay more for the longer lasting plugs.
For wires, I would really only change them when they seem to need it (any rips/tears in the wire coating can lead to arcing and a loss of power to the plugs). My stock wires were still doing pretty well at 100k miles.

The reason for not wanting to do that is because it tears up the rare metal on the electrode. If you have copper plug, it won't hurt them. But it also won't hurt to be cautious.
