I would. Hit it with a hi grid like 1600 just to scuff it. It should look a little hazy. Then hit it with tint then clear.

What Red Pony said. Just remember to clean the tail lights after you sand them.

If you're gonna get a ticket for tinted lights, odds are the revers lights aren't going to make a difference. Just tint the whole light.

I tinted my tails and sanded. At the very minimum I would at least hit it with a Scotchbright pad to scuff it up. It'll help the paint stick. I sanded mine because there's some lettering and molding marks on the lens. I sanded those out with 1000 grit so it was smooth.
I've never seen any state laws that require backup lights to be untinted. Most states simply specify the light output and red reflector locations. If you're going to get a ticket for tinted tails, it's going to be because they aren't bright enough or you tinted the reflectors. But you should check your state laws.

If you want LED just replace the bulbs, just make sure you get a proper flasher to avoid hyperflash.

You need: 800 grit 1000 grit 2000 grit Wet/Dry Sand paper 1 Can VHT night shades 1 Can of a clear coat 1 bottle of Plastic Polish/Scratch Remover 1 polishing pad These tail lights have a thin layer that its best if you sand through it. Hell I even used a sander w/ 400 grit to get through it ![]() Make a mixture of dish soap, some windex, and water. Soak your sand paper in it. Anyways when you get through that layer, Scuff the surface w/ 800 A good idea is to wrap a sponge in the sand paper to even the pressure. Glean that surface w/ rubbing alcohol or or windex. Let it dry. Wether your going to tint reverse lights or not, still scuff it. They will be very fuzzy and cant see through... Then soothe w/ 1000grit evenly If your looking for black your going to want more than 3 coats ... if your coating right .. You need to do several thin coats ... read the directions on the can to know how to do it. I let mine sit 15 minutes or so, in warm air to flash and put the next coat on. I should have done mine a little lighter each time, but here is two coats w/o buffing ![]() ![]() ![]() So 2 medium coats will get you that w/ some clear coat on top. So if you want "black" im going to guess about 5-6 coats, but for the most part you can see when its going to be black. 5 would be my guess. You want that to dry for the correct amount of time stated on the VHT can. Next, you want to LIGHTLY go over it w/ the 1000 to a haze, to scuff the surface and make the clear coat stick ... Just remember the harder and longer you do it, the thinner your VHT will be, so LIGHTLY do it. Then you'll start the clearing process the same way. Do 4-5 coats of light clear, the do a final heavy clear coat. But not so heavy it runs or drips ... Let that dry according to directions on can. 24hrs maybe ? Once dry, you'll have an orange peel effect. If you like it, keep it. If not: LIGHTLY scuff the surface, carefull not to go through the clear coat, w/ the 2000grit only. Once it has a nice haze, Polish it w/ a polish pad and your plastic polish ... by hand does require balls and effort, but it will come to a glossy shine when your done ![]() Install back on car, jack off to your success ... Good day! |

I buffed that taillight later and it isnt as dark, but close. |
