Suspension & Handling Questions

Hey guys,

I'm looking to slowly upgrade my car's suspension but I want to make sure that everything I do will have the desired effect before I spend any money, so I have a few suspension and handling questions. For reference my car is a '99 V6 with the full stock suspension, no rear swaybar, and 245/45R17 tires.

Will adding a rear swaybar make my car more prone to oversteering by overloading the tires or will the added wieght placed on the rear tires in turns will keep the rear end more planted to the pavement?

How do Koni Street Shock's, Tokico HP Blue's, and KYB GR2's compare to each other? Are any these much of an upgrade over stock shocks or would I be better not bothering to replace my factory shocks with any these as long my factory shocks are still in good condition?

Bullitt, Mach 1, and 03/04 Cobra Coupe front springs all have a 600lb/in spring rate; are all three springs the same or are there differences in ride height between them when they are installed on the same vehicle?

How noticeably do Steeda X2 ball joints effect the handling of a Mustang? Does the raised roll center reduce body roll as much as an upgraded sway bar, or higher rate springs would, and what kind of lifespan do these have compared to a factory ball joint?

Any information is greatly appriciated.

also you might want a limited slip diff or locker so both wheels turn instead of just the rear right tire

spring wise...cut fox 4cyl springs on the front and cut oem springs on the back...

for the rest
strut tower brace & a shock tower brace...sub frame connectors...tokico seems to always get high marks so that's a good place to get some shocks

if you want a good read go to the 99-04 modular section and read on jazzer the cats posts

Can't use cobra springs. They have IRS and the rear springs are different from ours.

So are you loOking for a good handling car that can still handle the street well?

I would say go with a full coilover setup with fully adjustable shocks and struts. Then get new rear control are. The lowers don't need spring mount so you just need the ones that are a bar with eyelets on each end. Then get tubular rear uppers with spherical bushing. You might even want to get a torque arm and panhard bar and eleminate the uppers all together. Then get a shock tower brace and a rear end brace. (swarr bar, Che brace, ect.)

As for the front. Get a tubular k member with tubular a arms. Get a strut tower brace and some cc plate. You also want to invest in a good bumpsteer kit (steeda or maximum motorsports. Not upr.) and possibly some solid rack bushings.

Type in on google "official suspension Thread" and a thread from nodded will show up. Read over that and you should get a ton Of info.

Also you could go to maximum motorsports and get a grip box that has everthing you will need for a full suspension overhaul.

^ Is money no issue? Not like a new k-member and coilovers are cheap or anything...

the x2 balljoints are good pieces for a lowered application, I've no no probs whatsoever. I also recommend Tokico HP's if you want a step up from stock but don't want to drop heavy coin.

I'd also stick with aftermarket springs that are made for the v6, rather than going to a heavier spring made for v8's... my full suspension set up is in my garage here, add full length, weld-in subframe connectors and some rear control arms to that list and you'll be good to go.

Remember that tires are a huge part of grip and handling as well, don't let those slack or its pointless to have a nice suspension set up.

Money is a definate issue for me so things like coil overs, adjustable shocks, and aftermarket k-members just aren't going to happen. MM Subfrmae connectors and Caster/Camber plates are in my plans already becuase from what I've read there's really no excuse for not having having them.

I'm trying to stay away from aftermarket lowering springs because I don't want to lower my car more then 1" if I don't have to and the OE Bullitt, Mach 1, and Cobra springs actually have a slightly softer spring rate then most of the aftermarket springs I've looked at, plus I tend to prefer a linear spring to most progressive designs.

A trac-lok is in my future but I'm not sure if it will be in a 7.5", a 8.8", or a cobra IRS 8.8" so I'm holdng off on that for now because I'd like an IRS at some point in the future, so I don't want to sink money into anything else for the rear end.

I've read a little bit already and know where I want to take my car for the most I'm unclear on the issues that I asked about.
