Bad CV Joint..

My car has been making a sound VERY similar to this, maybe not as high pitched/fast, but it's like a card in bicycle spokes.

It really annoys me. One morning I even started my car and heard a clunk, the car vibrated and there was a very loud deep rattle from the rear. That was a few weeks ago.

Is it possible it broke, came loose? Would this also make my car sluggish?

At this point I don't really have a clue what is wrong with your car... but you don't have a CV joint.

Is there a clunk noise when you put it in drive or reverse?

Yeah Mustangs dont have cv joints. Front wheel drive cars do. Could you possibly have a differential leak and all the gear oil be depleted?

It's stick, and no, when I put it in gear it's fine. Usually when I'm driving around and there's cement barriers/cars on either side I can hear the sound echo off of them.

Luckily it isn't a CV then, might of been costly. It could be a leak then? How do I check gear oil?

As far as I know the easiest way to check the gear oil is to drain it and just fill it again to be sure. And cv joints are easy to repair and cheap, believe it or not. I didn't know this until after I had gone out and bought my Mustang because I thought it was irreparable. Then I decided to fix my previous fwd car and it cost me maybe 130$ total after renting a ball joint separator and buying the grease and the new half shaft.

99+ Cobra's have CV joints.

@OP

What are the exact circumstances that causes the noise? I don't want to know the story behind it. Just when it makes the noise, and if you can 'make' it happen.

The easiest way is to take the fill plug out and stick a thin item (coffee straw, allen key, zip tie, ect.) into the fill plug and see it you get oil on the item. That or open it and look into the fill plug hole. Draining and refilling will not give you an idea of how much is in there unless you can get EVERY drop out and measure EVERY drop compared to how much should be in there. (3.5-3.75 pts)

Harmonic balancer maybe? Those give a steady clicking noise almost when they are dead. Just some food for thought, I know it took me a while to figure out what was causing that noise on mine, so now when people talk about clicking noise I automatically suggest that lol.

I've had small exhaust leaks like that, I only noticed them when I was next to a solid barrier with the window down. With cracked exhuast manifolds being some what common on these cars that's the first thing I would check.

I think that's it, it just has to be, could I fix it myself.. or is this a job for a professional? I figure it might cost some money.

It should be an easy enough job on a V6, but you might have some trouble with the collector bolts. I'm not sure if you can get to them from up top or if you'd need to remove them from underneath the car. I'm sure someone will chime in with an answer, right now my car is in another state so I can't go check.
