quick Wiki respones:
A cam is a rotating or sliding piece in a mechanical linkage used especially in transforming rotary motion into linear motion or vice-versa.[ It is often a part of a rotating wheel (e.g. an eccentric wheel) or shaft (e.g. a cylinder with an irregular shape) that strikes a lever at one or more points on its circular path. The cam can be a simple tooth, as is used to deliver pulses of power to a steam hammer, for example, or an eccentric disc or other shape that produces a smooth reciprocating (back and forth) motion in the follower, which is a lever making contact with the cam. Cams do increase power and torque, but that depends on the type of cam. heres an example of a camed V6 |

Many cams are out there. They are specced for your preference. You can get something choppy like that ^^^ or something that can keep you sounding pretty well stock and give much more power.

in the case of our sixers (94-04) our cam is located roughly in the center of the engine block. we only have one cam becuase our engines are OHV (over head valves) and 2v per cyl
a cam determines lift and duration the cam rotates do to the timing chain or belt (i belive) and when it rotates the lobe of the cam will push up on the push rod thus opening the valve and when the cam peaks on its rotation the push rod will come back down closing the valve. the part tht opens and closes the valves looks like......a tear drop or w/e u wanna call it now in the case of the 05-10 sixers those are SOHC (single of head cam) which ironically isnt one cam there two cams one in each cyl....or above each cyl bank (not in the engine block) DOHC (dual over head cam) is like the same thing of a SOHC except as u might of guessed it its two cams per cyl head or cly bank (if my terminology is correct) i hoped that help and tht my explaination was correct what i typed came out better in my head lol

SOHC
Google Image Result for http://images.musclemustangfastfords.com/tech/mmfp_060400_27z+High_Performance_Crate_Engine_Buye rs_Guide+DSS_Inc_4_6_SOHC_mill_view.jpg as you can see in this image on the top of the existing engine on each side theres two gear disk looking things (idk the tech name for it) that is attached to what looks like a timing belt and behind the gear looking thing is the cam and theres one on each side of the engine/cyl bank DOHC http://www.bimmerwerkz.com/forum/att...0_0100_img.jpg you should be able to see both cams in this i hope this helps and my wording is correct

In a nutshell, camshafts, or 'cams,' for short, are a part of the engine that dictate the amount + rate of air and fuel mixture entering the engine, and the amount + rate of exhaust fumes exiting the engine.
In the engine modification world, an owner of a car would swap his stock camshaft for an aftermarket one that has a more aggressive rate of pumping in air and sucking out exhaust fumes. When done correctly, the camshaft would increase the engine's performance and would make use of horsepower gains from different parts that wouldn't be squeezed out using the stock camshaft. There is an array of choices of camshafts. If you're not a seasoned engine modifier, I recommend you seek advice from your camshaft provider. Just tell them what your goals are (eg is it gonna be your daily driver or a pure racer? how many more parts do you wanna add with it and what are the parts, what's your budget, and so on). They'll come up with the appropriate camshaft for your needs, heck, even fabricate one from scratch if you need so. Good reads: If you don't know the connection between the camshaft and other parts of the engine, read: 1) HowStuffWorks "How Car Engines Work" and then 2) HowStuffWorks "How Camshafts Work" Summarized: Mustang Camshaft Tech Guide at AmericanMuscle.com In Depth: Camshaft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

Definitely answered a question I've been wondering myself. I want to get my 09 v6 cammed as well im just not sure if i want to go the choppy sound route or a more subtle route.
Does a more aggressive cam sound choppy? What's a good way to describe the kind of cam I want for a better increase in hp/torque in the mid ranges and is reliable for a DD? |
