T5 1st-3rd Whining Noise

This is a problem that I recently encountered and I just wanted to give my thoughts on the subject and see what others think of this aswell. Most people will say that a 1st-3rd whining noise in a T5 is caused by bad countershaft bearings, but I have to disagree with this now that I have rebuilt a T5 and know its inner workings first hand.

The countershaft bearings are the best lubricated bearings in a T5 and in the World Class models they are tappered so that they can handle thrust loads better and last longer; because of this I find it very hard to believe that bad countershaft bearings would be the source of this noise.

What I believe is far more likely is that I have bad inputshaft to mainshaft roller bearings or a bad thrust bearing between the inputshaft and mainshaft, these bearings are the worst lubricated bearings in a T5 and if the fluid level runs a little low they will not be lubricated at all.

These bearings can be serviced very easily by removing the front bearing retainer, front inputshaft bearing , and inputshaft. I plan on replacing these bearings in the next month or so when I start driving my car again and readjusting the mainshaft endplay to 0.001" since I'll have the front bearing retainer out to do this anyway. The bearings, race, inputshaft thrust washer, inputshaft seal and outputshaft seal retail for $79.46. Because of the cost for some people it will probably be more economical to completely rebuild your transmission; however since mine only has 70K miles on it and shifts smoothly, assuming I don't find anything when I open it up replacing the faulty bearings and a few seals for insurance seems like the way to go for me.

Some of these parts are mislisted in the wrong catagories, but the part subtitles confirm that they are indeed correct for a World Class T5 (1999 V6 Mustang). The parts are listed on fordparts.com as the following:

Auto Trans Input Shaft Needle Bearing (#C417-Q) $7.98, Timekn Part# QBR23549 $3.81
-Part# 7118
Forward Planet Bearing $12.40
-Part# 7D234
Manual Trans Input Shaft Thrust Washer $9.15
-Part# 7L357
Auto Trans Thrust Washer $14.95
-Part# 7D235
Auto Trans Extension Housing Seal (Inputshaft Seal) $17.98
-Part# 7052
Auto Trans Extension Housing Seal (Outputshaft Seal) $16.98
-Part# 7052

I like the whine on my manual tranny. It's not much different than most of the manual cars I've had. I actually have another whine on my car in the engine bay which sounds sorta like a supercharger. I dunno if anyone else gets it. The previous owner mentioned to me eventually that there was a whine caused by the powersteering whatever and they brought it to the dealership and said that there was nothing they could do about it.... I like it though. Sounds superchargey to me. I'll try to record it and see if you guys get it too.

But OP, yes, I like the whines. Drowns out the wife's nags

A

Wow, this thread got off topic in a hurry, lol. Well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. My PS pump whines like crazy too, but I find it annoying since I don't have a wife to drown out yet. My spring parts list is getting out of control.
